Swift Cover (warning)

Dear all

I am looking at getting a Z4, so have been using this website for a lot of advice - very good it is too!

However, I thought I'd share some info with you re Swift Cover and their policies when changing vehicle.

They have no problem changing the existing vehicle on my policy for the Z4 when I get it, but they will not insure both at the same time, at any cost.

So whilst they advertise temporary cover as a feature, they won't allow it in my case even though they don't have a problem insuring either/or the other cars on the main policy.

Kind of a problem when looking to buy and sell privately as you are likely to purchase the new wagon first and then flog the other in the next few weeks.

Did they say why they wouldn't? I would say that most people would have to buy a replacement car before selling the old one..... still got to get to work etc!

Shouldn't come as a surprise. These are the same company who had to pull their TV ads with Iggy Pop as they wouldn't actually have been able to provide him with insurance cover in real life. Oops!

I would say this is a problem with most insurers. When my last z4 was going back to BMW at the end of my agreement i bought another to replace it, they charged me 160 for the car to be insured sitting on the drive for 6 weeks,

Whilst I object to paying my ever increasing insurance premium, direct line have looked after me over the years. Generally the best price, and the one time I had to claim they were very efficient. Perhaps it's time to give Swift a two fingered salute and withdraw your custom?

I might be being a bit thick here, but you are complaining because an insurance company would not cover 2 cars on the same policy at the same time.
I'm not an expert but would have thought this is fairly standard practice throughout the industry and to be honest I would not have expected them to.

No, it's pretty much the opposite. The majority of insurance companies have always allowed a 'temporary' additional vehicle to be added to a policy - usually for up to a maximum of one month - because people quite often find that there is an overlap when replacing one car with another....

Yeah, usually the cheapest. I do shop around. Been with them 5 years now. Nearest quote was £170 more on the comparison sites etc.

Had to make one claim with them and they were super efficient

I wouldn't be sure that a smaller insurance company would be so quick and efficient in the event of a claim. I've heard some horror story claims

Might give them a try when mines up next month. I never bother with them as I try to hit most with the comparison sites then call round a few of the specialists - so by the time I've gone through my details, the other halves and the various mods etc I've had enough so the idea of phoning any of those that refuse to go on comparison websites doesnt appeal. Never quite understood that business model, surely they must be losing business hand over fist! Unless of course they are considerably more expensive so expect to be down on the list?

To confirm - the problem is that my current (soon to be "old") car and the new Z4 3.0 are not able to be covered as a "temporary" vehicle per SW.com's policies.

Official answer: Computer says no.

I usually sell my car and then go to buy my next car, wouldn't have the spare cash to buy the car otherwise :?

If you find the Z4 you want, why not just secure it with a deposit and ask the dealer to hold onto it while you sell your current one?

Yes, the answer is probably to secure the new car with a deposit and put the existing car on ebay starting at a low amount with no reserve.

Then sit and watch praying it goes up...!

Thing is, if I do that I might as well just trade it in at a dealer. The whole point of having both for a short time isthat it maximises the chance of getting the best deal i.e. buying and selling privately.
