Suspension now sorted ...

At least I hope so ... ;)

Picked up the car from Chris at Center Gravity today, he did the following:

1. Fitted new OEM RTA bushes and the Vorschlag limiter kit (replacing the poly bushes I had before)
2. Changed the rear coilovers to a barrel spring setup - still all Intrax parts (feck me they are expensive)
3. Slightly softened the rear springs compared with the coilover springs
4. Checked and re-set the geo (which was basically all OK)
5. Reset the ride height, and adjusted the bump stops, such that there actually is some travel in the rear suspension - the previous setup was such that the rear dampers were permanently on their bump stops

Result so far is a much more compliant and flexible ride. However, that was really just the motorway drive home. Looking forward to Brands tomorrow when I can start to test it out properly.

Pics of how the car sits now ??
i tried to keep mine as close to stock ride height as possible, proper wheel travel is key imo. BTW, great move going to the barrel spring on the back, these are simply aren't designed for a true real coil over.

mine sits like this, a good 2 finger gap.

Will try to take some pics for you. Not sure how reliable an indicator the tyre->wheel arch gap is though - it'll vary with different tyre sizes - e.g. my track tyres (Avon ZZ-R) are slightly smaller than my road tyres (MPSS).

Anyhow Brands was good - new suspension worked really well, and the adjustability on the dampers is now really superb. I started running on "road" settings and had a little too much roll into corners and too much diving under braking, making the rear a little frisky. Five clicks stiffer all round and the roll was perfect and the pitching under braking completely gone and the stability amazing.

One problem I had was a very strange "clonk" on one LH turn - it sounds just like something falling over and hitting or sliding up against something else - I'm convinced it is in the cabin somewhere, but I'm blowed if I can find it. It's not suspension - had all the wheels off and everything is solid; it's not brakes or wheels; its not in the boot (empty) nor the battery (solid). I even had the seats and the speakers out in case it was behind the bulkhead.

Could it be one of the diagonal braces not bolted tight enough to the bulkhead? I had a similar clonk when I bought my car and I was convinced that it was coming from the dashboard, until I tightened the strut braces; thereafter the noise has disappeared since.

yeah i wasn't using it as a reliable indicator.... i just like to see how these track used cars are sitting .... imo they need a decent gap for compliance and wheel travel ( which already takes a hit on these coil over setups)

Are you taking round Brands Hatch circuit tomorrow?

No, was there on Tuesday. Next track day is possibly Castle Combe on 24 June, but want to nail down the noise first if I can so won't go unless it is found.

After that it is Spa and Zandvoort in July.

Looks awesome. At some point I may fit coilovers on mine. But might have to settle on some H&R springs first. One step at a time
