Ian's was a stunner. The interior was really nice, massive step up from the previous gen.

Never really looked at the E89 before but a decent priced 35is would be welcome in my garage.

Would the lesser powered , ordinary 3.5 not do it for you Dan ? Have you had a run out in any E89 ?
There is certainly no shortage of E89s from £12k/£20k with vast array of engine & trim choices
For a weekender i don't get too hung up on any single particular's or needs , think i could be happy from 200bhp up ?
Then i could be happy with 2.7 Cayman or 3.6 911

I thought a real one had a lot more M badges than that.....ha ha... I can think of 17 at least on my car....

2-0...

The only thing ///M like thing on the 35is is the badges.

Which is enough for 95% of the population to think it is an M.

Good marketing

And although not even called M Sport but you get a non M Sport and M Sport 35i they still have stuck those little ///M badges all over the shop recently but then they stick them on anything now. Looks crap really. Quite glad mines doesn't have them on the wings. Pointless addition especially when there is no actual mention of M in the name.

Same engine as the 1M.......food for thought there.

As for good enough marketing.....most people don't even know A) what the car is apart from a BMW and B) couldn't tell the difference between them. Even other Z4 drivers don't know but that's cause to them it's just a car whilst to others, like us it's something a bit more.

On the point of what you can get for your money though looking at those mentioned it's still a lot of car for not a lot of money and ideal for a weekend toy.

I hope there isn't any M badges on the outside of mine when it arrives, they'll be coming off if there is, the inside i'll have to live with. It doesn't really matter but i'd rather it doesn't try to look like something it isn't.

The engines are exactly the same .. 100% .. except for exhaust length etc. so slight difference in power due to this

DMS are tuning one currently, and even the ECU revision code and ID are the same

you cant do that .. you would have just de valued your car as it will not be 100% original any more !!

if you have ordered a 35is .. then you will have M badges

This is all getting a bit off-topic.

Have you had a go in any E89 OG ?
I hadn't even considered one until this weeks net search revealed their fate & could be tempted into one around the £13k mark ?
Higher miles not really a issue for me as unlikely to add more than 3k/5k a year so a 70/80k car could be a cheap way in for me ?

Andy I agree with you a high miler is the way in and then you could get rid of that slow TT couldn't you

You will love the E89 as I just adore mine and I am only two weeks into ownership but my 35i is a really fantastic car :)

Mr W - yes I was lucky enough to get invited to the original launch event in May 2009 at Bedford Autodrome which included about an hour in a 35i driving round a pre-determined route in Bedfordshire. I've also had a go in a 35iS and a 2.0i.

I think they are a lovely car. Really nice interior and the front end is one of the best BMW ever designed but it's not really what I'm looking for so it hasn't really ever got me too interested. I'm not really a fan of turbos for my weekend toy and it's more of a boulevard cruiser than sports car in my opinion. They look like decent value though at their current prices and a new 35iS for early 30's is a hell of a deal.

 Im over wanting the fastest car Andy , pound for pound the best motor ive ever owned was a V8 645ci , just had the full bag of tricks with extras + infinite torque & no turbo required
Its all about pricepoint & usability for me as a weekend car , the TT ticks the boxes for now & should also return a small profit once time to sell so i'm happy with that
I will follow the E89s from now & if the right one at the right £ wafts under my nose i'l be on it like a tramp on a bag of chips

Heheh great response  I agree with you it's not about speed as with my 35i there is no way I will ever be able to sample its power but I love having the power to give it a burst here and there and it sounds superb, I really didn't like the 6 series but after you chastised me about them in a post a while ago I looked at them again and now I really like them and I can only imagine a V8 in one

Back off topic sorry......ANY BMW with the words M Sport in the title and the 35is have little ///M badges on the wings. First noticed this trend on several 320d thinking wtf? Then it became an addition towards the middle of last year on the E89. It's just not a good look in my opinion and you can order it without them. If you specify Debadged it only removes the Z4, model number and sdrive badges but not the ///M ones  Surley if you want no badges that's means none at all.

Anyways back on topic and lets start a sweep on when Mr Wilks will have one grace his drive :driving:

No didn't order it debadged as I quite like the 35is wing badges, not sure how not wanting M badges means no badges at all but no problem to take the M 1's off if required, i'll wait and see. Personally I don't see a problem with people putting whatever they want on their cars it's just for me the e89 didn't come from the M stable so i'd rather not have them on just to pamper bmw's marketing division. But either way no worries, it's only a badge.

Wow, I haven't looked in for a day or so and then I see this fast moving thread.

I bought my 3.5i, to replace an Alfa I bought from new, this was a 2nd car, only considered changing it when a Cayman S came on the radar, 3yrs old, it met my budget as I couldn't justify buying a new one, during this the Z4 came into the reckoning.

I did all of the usual Pistonheads classifieds, Autotrader, BMW UK used and RAC. Knowing I wanted a 3.5i or 3.5is I came across mine courtesy of Autotrader.

On some of the searches I kept seeing Z4's at a much lower price than the 3.5i I had in mind, then I realised they were not 3.5i's. These cars were/are still commanding a much higher price. I also saw my local BMW dealer had some E89's out on their forecourt last week, none when I was looking 2 months back, again much lower prices, a quick check and they were 2.0s.

I'm happy with my car, but I recognise not everyone can go that far.

So some of the smaller engined Z4's must represent a bargain to some. ETTO.
