Surprise !

Up at 4.45 every time I go into the office - I am allergic to traffic jams and trains

So, first commute impressions...

I have a funny feeling that Mrs B - and possibly the neighbours - will have something to say about my departure... My garage is directly under the bedroom and it really is bloody noisy cold. Not a lot I can do about that though

I'm following instructions and driving like Miss Daisy until it's warm. A very chilled approach to leaving the house, and the engine got to about 75 degrees just before hitting the motorway. Was a bit worried about that, but once on it I can do a reasonable speed and keep it under 3,000 RPM in 6th until it's up to temp. In fact I didn't have to take it out of 6th until I was passing Sidcup. The torque when cruising makes the whole experience even more easy than my 3.0.

Speed bumps are less stressful, though my 3.0 has trained me well.

Driving through some mixed environments - open road, motorway, urban carriageways, built up areas etc. - has revealed that it's a talkative little bugger. Those of you with experience of children will understand when I say it's like a baby on the edge of speaking for the first time crossed with a really grumpy Rottweiler. It mumbles and grumbles and squeals with delight, a multitude of varied and utterly different sounds - Adamski got it spot on earlier in the thread. Then under it all is the Rottweiler waiting behind a garden fence that suddenly jumps up and barks and snarls and generally goes mental at you. I can't think of one word that captures it to be honest, I love it.

It's probably at least 50% my lack of smoothness and general excitability, but I thought my 3.0 fuel needle dropped fast :o ...21.5mpg on the computer, still better than my benchmark (Focus ST) so I just going to tape over the needle :P

The hardest part is pulling away smoothly from a standstill. Couple of kangaroos, but I think I have it sussed - probably obvious to most, but the clutch doesn't want nannied, it needs to be given a job smoothly but decisively. It's a bit frustrating, but I've not driven a manual for 2 and a half years so I just need to get my seating position perfect and be patient I think.

I enjoyed the drive a lot - having that experience waiting at the end of the day is going to make the office much more bearable

Appreciate your thoughts Bing, be sure to let us know how the drive home goes... I'm going to look at an MC tomorrow so it's nice hearing from a 'new to the M' owner...

^ this :)

So good to read about the experience. It's hard to explain to anybody that hasn't driven an ///M just how much theatre, power and fun there is contained within that 3.2 litre package of Bavarian beauty.

Varied fuel economy you get used to.

Torque range you get used to.

Clutch you get used to.

Pissing off the neighbours you get used to.

Cold start burble, the looks, sound, power delivery and experience every time you slide into that seat - you thankfully never get used to

Haha great post bing.

Wouldnt worry about the neighbours.. I had a loud exhaust on my old celica, none of the neighbours noticed unless it was during the day - windows open etc. Thats what double glazing is for.

And if they hear the M soundtrack they should thank you anyway!!

One of my neighbours had a Ferrari 430 for a while. Now the S54 is loud on startup, that thing was ridiculous. In the summer with the bedroom window open when he left for work about 5 he was not popular.

Congratulations, bet you are well chuffed.

Have you let the mods know so they can increase the quota on the 'M Specific' board..?

Or are you just going to continue spamming this one

You will get used to it pretty quick bing. I don't really think about it anymore just feels normal after a while.

The only problem is when you drive other cars. Like jumping in the Mini the clutch feels sloppy feels like it has a million miles of travel also the steering is so easy you almost wrench the steering wheel off!

Also the traction control keeps everything in check, if anything it can be a bit frustrating if you want to get off fairly quick kills all power, I wouldn't worry too much about putting your foot down too hard

Well I wasn't aware that you were getting a new car? What's happenned to the 3.0.... I must have been living under a rock for the last couple of weeks.... :D

Once again a fantastic write up Bing. It's certainly a different machine to the standard car and takes a while to get used to.

I drove a black ///M convertible for a while yesterday and agree completely. The 1st to 2nd change needs to be thought about a little more, especially more than my 2.5. The noise is hugely addictive but it's a difficult one to describe.

Driving through town yesterday I couldnt understand why so many people were staring but then opened the window and with small streets and buildings on both sides it was the sound it was making.

Congratulations on your new purchase. Enjoy it, savour it and enjoy the process of getting to know it.

As a fellow car lover, I congratulate you twice...the first for keeping this quiet for so long, must have been the hardest part!
Second on a bloody fantastic car, making it even harder for you to keep it quiet :)

It needs a personalised plate though Bing. Or at least something to hide the age. Something as special as this needs the finishing touch.

Congratulations Bing  really pleased its treating you well and I bet you cant stop smiling :D

Glad the transition from auto to manual has gone well...enjoy and have fun in it :driving:

Bloody lovely. Take me out in it? Never been in an //M.

Also, get the light back covers ASAP, as if they get too wet inside it water marks the lenses and you have to split them, and you do NOT want to split them.

Congrats on the purchase Bing, I'm sure it will live up to all the expectations you have built up through your time on the classifieds/forum/in other people's ///Ms
Now, be sure to mention you have an ///M at least twice in every post for the next three months.

I think I have used The Letter just once so far - I'm avoiding it deliberately :D

Rob - wasn't there this morning. Not sure it's an issue, but will change them anyway as they're xenon. And can

hmm, I cant help noticing that its not Imola red.... :tumbleweed:

glad you've got an M though now, I am interested in the difference from your 3.0. I didn't imagine the M would be much different. I've never driven a non M Z4.
