Sunday Times Driving -Article About Enforcing 70mph Limit.

the variable by leeds on the m62 was sneaky. the way it seemed to work was if the gantry was off and blank then you were fine but if they showed a national speed limit symbol (so circle with a diagonal line) then the cameras was active for a 70 limit with its associated tolerance

On average though, speeding only results in you getting to your destination about 4mins faster
"the resulting speed awareness course " told you this of course

been there, listened, b0llox

Recommended to save 3 points, but otherwise a waste of time as far as over 70 is concerned. :headbang:

Actually it was a motorway copper who told me that, a few years before the speed awareness course even existed. And over the last 10 years since I have done the same journeys at different speeds and I think broadly he was right. Speeding on motorways to get somewhere faster because you're late doesn't result in getting you there faster unless the road is empty. Which is pretty much never...

Not even at 02.00? :?

I always respect the 20 / 30 /40 /50 / 60 limits  , but when you're on an empty dual carriageway / motorway then 70mph is a complete farce.

I accept that there are some really stupid people out there who haven't got a clue [and how they got a licence God only knows] but just keep your wits about you, and leave the lights on [and the RH indicator  ] and all should be okay

this is why i have a 2.0 :) i can enjoy thrashing it without going over speed limit almost instantly :)
and have a full on track car for racing/sprint .. keep it on track

those ones on the m25 been up for a while and are bloody bright when they flash

Its a valid point. I can't live without my powerrrrr though ...

Ahh see I have gone ages with loads of power.. But moving to competition track work just shows me how much you cant use it on the road anymore so I keep that on track.. Not saying I wont go back to more power when money is better (racings expensive) but more likely ill get a fun gt86 than an all out power car again. I full understand the need for power trust me I do..

But for now fun over outright speed for me is where it is on the road

It's not speed that kills - it's stopping that hurts :(

I think the issue here is that for years and years we've had a blanket 70mph limit, so "new" drivers have been brought up with it.

IMHO it's stupid, and needs to be replaced. :poke:

Discuss......... whilst :driving:

Not always true... I used to drive from South London to Edinburgh in a little over four hours. It's almost exactly 400 miles making my average speed 75mph  At 70mph it would take around 6h.

Ta

@thepits - should have been clearer... 'Which is pretty much never when I'm on the motorway'. On empty roads any time of day 70mph makes no sense. It's probably really quite hard to crash on a motorway when there's nothing on it and the weather is good, unlike a twisty A or B road.

Thinking about it, if variable speed zones work off traffic density reducing speed as it increases, you'd have thought they could be used to safely increase speed above 70mph if the density drops below certain levels....

From memory you were doing that trip in the wee hours, which did not require any slowing down and was on empty motorways - which I think is fine as I am in no way anti-speed, when it's safe. The conversation with the copper was about travelling in rush hour and daytime traffic - which is when most journeys are made, hence the use of the term 'average'...

Please stop trying to apply logic to traffic management / motorist milking schemes... that way lies madness...

Yeah, good point. Sorry about that..

Just read that article through... The capability to use the hadecs as average speed cameras over long stretches of motorway (which the old gatsos cannot do) is just depressing :(

Yep - on occasion it's taken the same 4 hours to drive from my place in London 40 miles to my parents' house :x
I should have add that I wouldn't dream of driving at that speed over that distance anymore, even in the small hours.

Whilst this makes sense and would aid traffic flow it probably wouldn't be as good at being a cash generator for the government, which may be the idea behind this under the guise of road safety and traffic management. Whilst not advocating out and out lawlessness the current system which has a degree of tolerance seems to work relatively well, the use of cameras operated in the way indicated in the article seem rather draconian to say the least.
