Thought it might be worth giving you good people a heads up about an interesting article in today's Sunday Times driving section . The article explains how the police are now using the cameras usually used for enforcing the variable speed limits on various motorways to enforce the national 70mph limit. It also explains about the new Hadec 3 cameras located between junctions 5 and 6 on the M25. These are not painted yellow but are in grey mounted discreetly on poles at the side of the motorway, they are simultaneous front and rear facing cameras that operate by radar which means that they do not need white lines painting on the road surface. It also goes onto say that more Hadec's have been put in position on the M25 between junctions 23 and 27, these will also go onto be rolled out for use on the M1,M3 and M6. It would also appear from the article that the police/government have been using the cameras on the M42, M40 junction to M6 toll junction as test area.
Happy points free motoring every one. :driving:

You'll still be fine at 80mph.
Maybe, maybe not. To quote the article directly "Kent police claim that not all drivers caught speeding by the cameras will be penalised, saying that they take into account the road conditions, time of day and speed of the vehicle before deciding wether to send out a ticket" (fair enough)."But they refuse to reveal the minimum speed at which they will take action......
Others (Forces, I Guess) will limit their speed to just under 80mph in line with guidelines - that police forces can ignore".

The Hadec 3 Cameras have been on the M1 for a while, can't remember what junction number, around 10-11.

Seen them flashing alot, blinding when coming the opposite way.

where's James Bond and his flip plates when you need him?

Jonny English had a more interesting way to avoid a ticket. :D

I'm just glad there are no motorways in Cornwall. Hopefully I'll be too old to drive fast, by the time they get that tech down hear.

I recently got pinged in a variable speed limit area on the M20 doing 61 in a 50. I think the gantry before said 60 and I just didn't spot the change fast enough. On the resulting speed awareness course I learned the variable speed limits are automated most of the time, working on traffic density. So they can change up and down with little warning, and more so around junctions. As for them being used for enforcing 70mph, I've thought this for a while and have been slowing down to 70-ish when I go under one with a camera on. You just have to be careful not to take people behind you by surprise or piss them off.

The Hadec ones are right sneaky though, I didn't realise they were anywhere apart from J5/6 on the M25 until coming back from Scotland after Christmas.

On average though, speeding only results in you getting to your destination about 4mins faster

Actually, you can't read the article online unless you subscribe :x

"the resulting speed awareness course " told you this of course

been there, listened, b0llox

Recommended to save 3 points, but otherwise a waste of time as far as over 70 is concerned. :headbang:

The hadec by the bell common tunnel near j27 on the m25 is definitely active and with a low threshold. I drove past it the other week and a car passed me, doing about 80 or so and it pinged him - I was very surprised.

I don't oppose speed limits but ours are so backwards and the people who set them seem to be sponsored by Brake.

A road where I live was recently reduced from 60 to 50, hasn't made a jot of difference to the number of accidents - no one crashed simply by doing 60 there.

Hope the cameras have a very fast shutter speed lol

......... That's probably torn it ....3 points on the way

A lot of drivers can't be trusted to drive at 70mph let alone 80mph plus. Some shocking driving standards out there, until that improves the limit will probably never change. Remember if you allow a 80mph speed limit, most people will go over that, nearer 90mph, much like a lot of people drive at around 80mph at the moment. Scary thought if you ask me.

Whats probably scarier to think about is the cars that were on the road when the 70mph limit was introduced in the first place.
The average car in the 60's would have struggled to reach the speed limit.
I remember being in a friends mk2 escort in the late 80's and he was racing an allegro which he just managed to beat and the speed he only just reached was 84mph which taking in the fact the speedo was probably wrong it may only have been 75mph

this is why i have a 2.0 :) i can enjoy thrashing it without going over speed limit almost instantly :)
and have a full on track car for racing/sprint .. keep it on track

those ones on the m25 been up for a while and are bloody bright when they flash

and sometimes worse.. people sitting in the middle lane at 60.. saw this a lot on saturday down the m40.. but i also couldn't believe the average speed on teh m40 compared to other #mways i was happy sitting at motorway limits :) and i was one of the slowest cars on there
