Sun Roof Not Working

A few weeks ago I tried out my sun roof and it reluctantly worked after a couple of tries, now when I try and open it the windows go down but nothing else happens, does anyone have any ideas could it be the motor and is it an expensive repair?

It’s could be anything from a faulty sensor/micro switch to a broken wire, you would be better off trying a fault code scanner on it or taking it to your local garage for a diagnosis.

Well I have found out today that it is the pump and motor that have gone due to water ingress and the cost of a replacement part is over 2.6K, this is from a local specialist as well not a dealer.
I have found the part I need on ebay for just under 1k. However, I was wondering if the motor/pump used in another bmw model would fit as they seem much cheaper :D

Sorry to hear that, I think I’ve read that a pump from an Audi A4 is the same, but you would have to check to make sure it’s correct.

Sure I saw these motors being sold as rebuilt units on ebay for something like £400?

Just checked - search e89 roof motor & there are tons available from reputable sellers. Are you certain you need the pump as well as the motor?

This is not as bad as you think.

That's what they told me in the garage, I have emailed them to double check but they did say motor and pump were damaged :?

Well at that cost, I think I may be going somewhere else for a second opinion.

Not on the cost but the diagnosis, if I was going to spend anywhere near that I would want to be 100% certain it was going to fix the issue

I am no expert so can only go by what they are telling me. I've messaged the garage to ask them if it is definitely both the motor and pump. I've actually found a motor and pump on ebay for £579 so bought that and will see if I can get someone to fit it for me :D

If you use the search function on here and put in, roof motor strip, there are a few posts on removing the motor and drying it out, which got it working again.

Should there be any kind of roof drains that I need to look for in case they need unblocking as well do you know?

There are no drainage channels to unblock, the problem is how the water runs around the rear and sides of boot, you need to check the condition of the rubber seal around the top edge of the boot, BMW use a sealant that dries out and turns to power letting water past, also it’s quite a common problem for the rubber seal around the back lights not being fitted correctly, you need to make sure that it is sitting either side of the body work and not on only one side as water is channeled over the rear lights to drain away.
