Stung?

So I bought my e89 almost 2 weeks ago. Took it to bmw dealer near me today for a new battery to be supplied and fitted… £277.80. Ok I think, expensive but I have peace of mind it’s a bmw one.

Arrive and the take my chariot…

Half hour later… 2 tyres are borderline thread and one has a deep cut to thread, “needs urgent replacement”. Fine replace the 2 tyres then.

Add on another £500!

Then the whammy comes…

The 2 back wheels have had several weld repairs. One has a 3x weld repair and the other has 2x weld repair. “We suggest you replace the wheels as they would be significant weakened due to the repairs. It would pass MOT but we advise to change them for new”.

OMFG sirens go off in head at this stage…

“Tell you what”, he says, “we’ll give you free fitting and take 10% off for you”. Ok, I ask how much, £1100 and change.

I bought myself a £110 watch too and therefore left with a bill of £2073.09.

I’m still trying to comprehend who screwed me most. The garage who sold me the car and didn’t tell me about the condition of the wheels or BMW. I am tending to heed the advice of BMW more though.

I’ve contacted the garage I bought the car from and advised them of the bill. All within 2 weeks of getting the car. I e asked for compensation given I wasn’t told about these issues. Also the car had passed the MOT the day I got it. Shouldn’t the barely legal tyres and wheel condition have been picked up? I’ve done about 300 miles since picking it up.

Erk. Feel a bit deflated and wonder if anyone has advice please.

Thanks in advance.

Ouch,

That’s not fun. I’m not offering legal advice here so don’t take what I’m typing as gospel but

I’d have thought the tyres might have appeared as advisories on the MOT. Can you not check using your car’s registration here:

https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

With regards the wheels themselves, I don’t know hopefully someone will be along shortly with a definitive but again maybe it might show as an advisory but if it wasn’t critical on the day of the test it wouldn’t necessarily fail because of it (don’t know for sure)

In your position armed with what the MOT history throws up I might go back to the selling garage looking for some sort of compensation. Like you say it’s been 2 weeks so hopefully you got some sort of after sales warranty

Good luck

OMFG!!! was my first response, 2nd was I hope they lubed you up before

Now in response to your queries

Battery, expensive but norm for going to dealer, normal diy price under £100 and coded/register yourself if able if not £15 from Indy/Halfords

The tyres should’ve been mentioned on the MOT if 3mm or below. The cut to thread is a failure.

Depending on size/brand £200 Ish a corner will get you most Michelin’s you’ve paid dealer premium for those.

Wheels, again dealers taken the opportunity to sell you them, I wouldn’t have been happy with those welds myself but would’ve replaced the whole set for a good aftermarket set of say Veemanns for £700. If you’ve got something like 326’s they’re fragile at best so replacement won’t necessarily mean no more cracks or repairs. But it seems to be luck of the draw and what type of roads they’re driven on and tyre type (run flats or not)

I’d most definitely be taking all these issues up with the selling dealer, particularly the robustness of the MOT given the points you’ve raised and the non disclosure about the quite frankly f**ked wheels

Hopefully many trouble free miles from now on

I’ve just come off the phone. The manager should be calling soon in response to my email. They told me nothing about the wheel welds. :x

To be fair to the place that sold you the car if all they knew about it was an MOT pass then they’ll likely not know anything about the repaired wheels, a pass is a pass. You also didn’t have to replace them with BMW at their prices. I feel your pain but maybe you could have hung on for wheels as they’re not cracked again etc,. Did you not check the tyres when you bought it…? Not having a pop at you btw, it’s a shame you’ve shelled out so much.

You should have gone back to the dealer who sold you the car with the information given to you ,as the car was not road worthy, before spending that amount of money at the BMW dealer. Not a good start to your z ownership.

I feel for you and I hope you have luck with the manager of the dealer that sold you the car. If he isn't interested then I think you'll have to prove either the car wasn't roadworthy or wasn't as described. Did the dealer do the MOT themselves?

Other than that, it's lessons to be learned unfortunately. My other half had a similar experience, she was pretty sure they swapped the tyres in between her viewing and picking up. Always check, always double check.

Regarding BMW prices, yes they're very expensive, that's what they do - they've got to pay for the complimentary coffee somehow. Either find a good local independent BMW specialist or shop around. You don't need a BMW specialist to replace tyres or wheels, you just want the best deal.

Lesson learned then maybe. I just wanted to be confident the car would be safe and given it was BMW advising me, I accepted it as best advice. Rightly or wrongly. Lesson learned.

The fact the MOT failed first time round and they had the wheels welded may give you some comeback. Unfortunately if the welded wheels are an MOT pass and legal and you didn't specifically ask if there was any work done on the wheels will give them the opportunity to say the car was sold roadworthy. Same with the tyres, if they were road legal then the garage is covered.

To me the BMW garage have taken the piss a bit, should have informed you of the issue, given you a quote and a bit of time to decide.

How many miles have you done since you bought the car? If the two tyres were borderline thread, not sure if you meant tread, or thread showing, then I would be pushing the selling dealer for reimbursement on those. The wheels I think you will get nowhere with unfortunately .

OUCH!!! Shame you didn't put a line on the forum before you bought the battery and the rims we could of saved you some dosh. Hopefully it will be plain sailing from here and fingers crossed for the compensation.
