Stubbie Aerials

So are all Stubbie aerials after market mods (albeit with BMW genuine parts in most cases)?

I always assumed that back in the e89 days certain models came with Stubbies or buyers could select them from the options list, but now I’m wondering if they all came out of the factories with Whippies?

All E89s in all markets had a 'rod aerial' aka whippy..there were two versions of the aerial and 3 of the base..all same dimensions..

The 'sport' aka stubby was an option that could be 'officially' fitted..it was offered on other 1,2,3 series as well as E85/E86..

I wouldn't have minded a manual push down pull up aerial. Good job don't listen to radio as the stubby is pretty much useless.
But convenient for putting cover on the car.

Are you saying forget about it because the reception quality is so bad?

I put a stubby on mine the same week I got the car and I have had no issues with radio reception be it in the UK or in Spain.

Not sure whether to be impressed or concerned about your deep knowledge of BMW aerials

Mine came with the Stubby and I much prefer it looks wise, but I'm sure others have differing opinions. Never listen to the radio so no idea about the reception.

Yes I’m sad..I have most of the staff technical training documentation for the E89..so when these questions pop up there is usually an answer.

You can look at realoem and newTis as well although as I’ve learned you need to be very careful when navigating those systems.

Personally I think stubbies look ok on E85s/E86s but the E89 merits a full whippy.

If people looked at the layout you would see that the whippy in most markets is just one of 3 FM aerials..so whether you have a full whippy, a stubby or no aerial the FM reception will be ok in many circumstances

If you have DAB fitted it’s usually crap in many reception areas..

No DAB in NZ, so any car I've owned with it fitted has just been a waste of technology. My 2010 has TV which is a crazy idea. Who wants to watch Conornation Street in their e89?

I've actually started buying CDs again for use in the car. I enjoy handling the physical media and listening to full albums rather than just singles.

I put a stubby on mine the same week I got the car and I have had no issues with radio reception be it in the UK or in Spain.

Radios in sports cars should be be illegal
You should be too busy listening to the engine note and exhaust to even THINK about the radio
I fitted a stubby though because it looks better I feel ( it does work when I once put the radio on to test it ) :wink: :wink:

I think some of the FM aerials listed are for the am and short wave and remote, which i receive nothing on my car radio, about 3 station fm with stubby, where i park top of hill in town. Yet to find anything to listen to on radio that wasn't propaganda.

I assume your E89 is a Japanese import..in which case I think the combination of receiving signals from Tokyo may be a bridge too far..

I buy CDs , but then encode them in a USB stick and/or an old iphone as an iPod.

Manhandling the CDs does cause scatches and contrary to orginal sales pitch they then stutter, skip and lose quality.
