Stripped out Z4MC

Considering doing this now prices have dropped - a sort of Z4M CSL.

I've seen a car on here where seats have been replaced for buckets etc..

Has anyone removed carpets and gone back to bare metal floors (a la Ferrari scuderia) - I'm just wondering if someone has done this, how much sound deadening muck they had to remove from under the carpets etc (sometimes hours of work in itself) - anyone with experience this sort of project?

Dont know of anyone myself but it has been done before if you go by the popularity of Z4Ms in VLN and other series.

Would love to see a project like this! An M3 CSL intake, more aggressive cams and remap, a decent set of coilovers and brakes and bucket seats. Awesome.

You can get carbon wings, boot, bonnet, doors, roof, so I'm sure there's more than 100kg to lose.

The Red Bull Z4 GTR was down to 1200kg (with 400ps/395hp) when it won the 2008 Britcar 24hr - and that was with just a 'lowly' straight six. I was marshalling and this was the car that made me leave the dark side of e34 M5 ownership :o

Anyone with a chip, intake & exhaust claiming anywhere close to 400ps/395hp at standard revs should look at what Duller had to do to get a real 400ps/395hp at 8400rpm.

Now that's a carbon intake...

If i'm not mistaken the GTR's had about 420PS. From a 3.2! :o

Apart from the elaborate scoops the rest of the intake is standard M3 CSL, everything else is suitably modified though.

Edit: Just noticed that Duller's website says 400PS but i could've sworn i read 420PS elsewhere...

Have often thought about this myself, having previously had a track car. I'd imagine that big gains could be made through simply replacing the electric seats with something fixed backed and on manual rails. Install harness bar and some harnesses, go for a light battery, upgrade the brakes, fit some lighter wheels and job done. It's such a small cabin I can't see much weight being saved from removing carpets and sound deadening, although I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows otherwise.

Obviously it pays to start with a super light non optioned Z4MC that isn't weight weighed down by the anchor of a sat nav system in the first place...

My CSL intake is similar, but part of the intake is not standard CSL, looks like a one off build to me

The Duller car is so one off that you would not belive... Look at the suspension tops - notice something? The cost of the suspension on that car is probably 2/3 of a dealer bid for a standard 50k 2006 Z4MC now... The suspension arms have nothing to do with ours... I can go on and on...

Should you wish to build just a CSL hunter you will need to budget about 5k if you are to do the work yourself...

When I had the seats (heated, electric, similar to my Z4MC) out of my previous car, Z3MR, I weighed them at 29kg each. Should be relatively easy to get 40kg out of just the seats. I have read that the Z4MC doesn't have much sound deadening to remove, but if carbon panels are available then I agree, over 100kg should be do-able. That boot weighs quite a lot.

Well there is a nice stripped out car for the race track its called the Zilhouette, look to there website www.zilhouette.nl/ Just 900 Kg (1984 lb)

Yes, but it is only 2.5 litres, with 0-60 mph 5.5 seconds and top speed 155 mph. Not sure why they didn't modify an ///M :?
(click 'modellen' then 'specificaties')

This is a great pic. It won't work as a link, copy and paste it into the address bar:

Is it really Z4 based? It looks like a spaceframe chassis with Z4-shaped panels.

Go to "FOTO'S" here http://www.zilhouette.nl/modellen/ and check out the second photo

I wondered that too, but if you were to remove your boot lid and stick a cage and racing fuel tank inside it might look like that. Either way they've used a BMW striaght six, so I wonder why not a bigger one?

Well usually you buy the kit from them, then look for a salvage Z4 or E 36 series car and strip the parts you need to build the car up. I guess an E 36 series car is easier to find then a Z4M.
But I know an M3 engine (350 BHP) has been used.

No different to the 'silhouette' racing we've had in the UK (for example).

vsr_super_silhouette.jpg

Each car is 'named' after whatever shape they're using for the bodywork, but it's basically just a shell over space-frame chassis with engines from 2.0L to 6.0L. Basically, if it could fit into the silhouette of the car shell you had then it could be used, didn't matter if the original was front, mid or rear engined, as the engine could be placed wherever you wished.

In the US the biggest form of 'silhouette' racing is Nascar - and nobody assumes those are stripped out road cars.
