Sticky steering when did the change happen?

Very rarely use my footwell heaters allways the dash vents so its not just footweel plus i am sure the ECU sits just behind the dash need to get my TIS reloaded.

Thing is its not just the heaters that can cause this if the car is sitting in direct sunlight this can also cause the same prob as i am sure some of our US members from the hotter states have found out

Exactly - if the ambient temperature rises enough, no amount of heat-shielding will do any good.

Any more news of the investigation into this in the US?

I had the same problem with my 04 3.0 where the steering would be sticky during our hot days of summer here in Virginia USA. If car was sitting outside for any period of time, the issue would be there. Took car into dealership two different times while in warranty. First time they said nothing was wrong. Second time they said they did some adjustments ????, still a problem. Car went out of warranty and continued having issues with steering. I went back and complained again and BMW finally replaced the column for free because I already had it recorded during warranty. The thing is that BMW is well aware of the problem and knows of the defect. Just keep working on them to fix the problem for you. They will not do the right thing by issuing a recall, so again be forcefull in getting them to fix it (and for free).

......That was my thought also, why if its an ECU issue does it cost £2.5k to sort.....

It's because the ECU is attached from the factory to the steering column, so it's a whole steering column change - about £1500.00 for the column and about a grand to fit it (by BMW)

Update!

Right.. my car is in the garage as I type this message looking into the steering issue. I had thought that it was the front wishbone rear bushes that were shot but it seems they are fine..

The car still wanders alot and seems to steer itself everywhere and its getting worse but my mechanic cant find a thing wrong, infact he says its like new underneath (which I was pleased with)

Is this sounding like the steering rack problem to anyone??

Not sure this is the right thread for this?

How about http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8802

I own a 2005 Z4 roadster and once in a while a have this problem, my dealer has read the diagnostic system and found nothing wrong... advised me to replace the steering system with a new system (hardware) price 1800,- Euro. In my case it not relevant with heat because its not present in cold dry winter air when I turn up the heater. It occurs on humid air conditions for longer periods.
It spoils the driving fun.
