Steering, feature or Issue?

It wasn't unsafe per se, just a little annoying as it's difficult to keep in a straight line without constantly making small corrections. However, it has just gone away like it has just received a software patch :dunno:

I think it’s the temperature dropping that has made the difference. If you go on a really long journey it will come back.
I got called back by the dealership and had an apology.
I had a tech come out and speak to me about another issue and I discussed this with him. He said he will raise it with bmw but he suspects that it’s something within the rack as he says that gets really hot due to bits around it. He seemed to know his stuff (master tech)

As I said, he will open a case with bmw and maybe they know something.

Last Thursday I was driving for about 7.5 hours and Monday for about 4 hours without occurrence.

Can’t be a coincidence that the temperature drops and the issue disappears for both of us.

Sad to say my issue came back even with low temp. It’s with bmw now. It’s a dead zone around the centre point. Very annoying and as you say on motorway makes it hard to stay in lane with constant corrections.

Week after posting and cancelling the appointment with BMW, the issue also returned for me after two hours of motorway driving, it was a warmish day low 20's. The symptoms were the same but to a lesser degree, I shall wait until my next service.

Hope you have success in getting it solved

It’s still with them and will be with them for another week as they wait for a part (not related)

I explained the problem to the tech who understood and has sent it to bmw for some info. I did some research myself and on other BMWs where someone has said this exact problem has happened it was a new steering column and rack.

Well, just as an update. They still haven’t heard back from
BMW, but as I said it will problem be a steering column and rack if they ever get back to the dealer.

On my separate issue which was a problem with my seat moving under acceleration, they stripped it down and replaced the frame of the seat. Then managed to rip the seat leather when putting it back together. Just one of those things.

Ordered new leather and guess what…::part delivery is 26th December!!!! Now that’s a wait. Even with my bad maths we are looking at over 2 months.

When is your next service? My car is currently with bmw and will stay there probably until Jan while waiting for a part.
They haven’t even looked at steering issue as without seat they cannot drive it.

My next service is in 11,000 miles @ 41,000 miles, so probably July next year. How long have they had your car?

3 weeks and counting. Part not expected for the seat until end of December.

I am having the exact same issue.
G29 m40i 2022
Alignment done.
Steering rack changed
Lower steering shift replaced.

Still have the issue.

As others mentionned It comes and goes with temperature it seems. Even when cold it takes time but as it warms up it does it.

What was your solution or fix?

Do you ever get to the bottom of this? My old car did this and even though I had a new steering rack installed, I think the issue came back.
Now I’m curious and also if it ever happens in my new car, I wanna know what to look at.

I have a G22 M440i with exactly the same problem. Microcorrections needef to keep in a straight line. BMW advise nothing wrong with the car. My research found it to be a common complaint across this G generation. Professional reviewers even commented on it when testing brand new cars. Might just be the way they are. Unless you are a keen driver / interested in cars you might never notice it......I think alot of drivers dont. I just enjoy mine now and accept its not got steering as good as a Porsche!

No this is a separate thing.

When it happens, the steering feels “notchy” around the centre and has playing around 2 degrees and then requires some force to get it past that point. It makes for a horrid motorway journey.

As I said my new car isn’t suffering this, so I’m hoping it’s something they’ve resolved, but if it isn’t, I would like to know if someone actually found what the problem is.

That sounds like the sticky steering on E85

Ahh....I understand Ori. No mine is not notchy, but a little dead in mid position which seems to be normal. Hope they get to the bottom of it for you.

Hi all
Same car ,same model ,same problems
Z4 m40i
Dead spot on steering in straight ahead position
Very annoying
Bmw Norwich seen less than interested
Less than 30000 miles
