Variable speed limits are fine - I've spent 18 years driving through more and more variable speed limit areas in the South East and watched them spread up the M1 etc. they are variable for a reason, provide warning of heavy traffic and help keep things moving. However I believe that the cameras are only activated when a varied speed limit is in force, otherwise they are not 'live'... At least I've never had a ticket :?
Average speed cameras in roadworks - a PITA, but also a good idea. Keeps things moving, mostly, and let's be honest the guys working in the roadworks are in harms way their whole shift so it just makes sense. Amazes me how many people still do not understand the definition of the word 'average' though
However, as far as I can tell this initiative is aimed at monitoring traffic speed ALL the time. It'll be a nightmare - haulage vehicles doing 57mph in the slow lane, often in the middle lane, Captain & Mistress Slow doing 55-67 in the middle lane and sometimes the fast lane depending on how much flatulence they are expelling at any given moment, and the number of lorries frightening them, and then the 'fast' lane limited to a maximum 70mph or you get a ticket. You won't need variable speed limits anymore, we'll all be doing 40. Everywhere. Or we'll all be banned because we racked up 12 points on the way to Sainsburys. W@nkers. They should spend the money budgeted for this on fixing the fucking roads instead - and I bet none of the revenue forecast from this initiative is earmarked for that particular Herculean task. In fact I reckon potholes are an anti-speed conspiracy too - "let's not bother fixing them - it'll slow people down, insurance premiums will go up because of the damage caused & claimed so less people will drive, we can stick more cameras up with the money saved, and kick back for longer lunches with a few tinnies whilst watching funny sh1t happening safe in the comfort of our nice cosy CCTV World Revenue Generation Control Centre". Utter, utter bastards. All of them.
