when i started this thread i did not intend it to provoke such passion just a little pondering, but then all the different view points are very interesting.
I personally agree that most of the ribbing is bassed around a little envy as was said about being able to have one, only needing 2 seats etc. although I do feel there are some cars that I would not have, the tigra being one, and anything in pink :!:

I had a Saab convertible prior to my Z4 roadster and got/get the hairdresser/girly car dig every now and again. I give it the reaction it deserves, none whatsoever. It bothers me not in the slightest.
Prior to buying any of the cars I owned I sought no ones approval, therefore I don't seek/need it post purchase. I really don't care.
The hairdresser thing, the Boxster poor mans Porsche thing, BMW drivers c0ck thing and many other cliched car insults are just people jumping on the bandwagon, usually the Clarkson bandwagon.
Do any of you jump on those bandwagons?

The Z4 Roadster is a true thoroughbred amongst sports cars for the simple reason that it was designed from the ground up to have the best looks combined (in the 2.5/3.0l+) with the best performance.
Virtually any other soft-top i.e. all the shopping trollies like Fiestas, Renaults, TT's and even the BMW's are all chop-top's and therefore seriously compromised from the out-set.
The Z4 coupé is just for the closet roadsterites that have yet to embrace their true feelings and come out to the World... :roll:

I beg to differ Sars
The 356 may have been about the cost of an E-type. But the 356/E-type was much more costly than an average car. I would say that i was pointing more towards the fact that when Porsche made a new model. The old one went the way of the Dodo. The 356 was replaced by the 912 rather than augmenting it. The same with the 912 to 911 model. I believe the 914 was marketed in Europe as a volkswagon. Which did not go unnoticed by the American buyer. not many 914/6's were ever made. When Porsche came out with the 924-944 it wasn't long before it was found that those were made out of spare Audi parts. So I would say that they have had to go backwards to try and establish a base model. Rather than keeping an older model active as a base with the top models being developed faster to satisfy the high end buyer.
And being an old coot. I remember way back. Ferry Porsche was interviewed by an American auto magazine. He was very honest about the Porsche being a high end only maker. The magazine asked why were the cars so costly when the basic design was rather old. And most improvements were evolutionary rather than revolutionary. He said that the customers of the Porsche expected exclusivity. One way to make sure of that was to limit production and keep prices artificially high. Ever since I read that. My opinion of Porsche was lowered. I still like their cars and would love to have another. But I have always felt that they were far more expensive than they should be.

On this years Islay meet on the return Journey we pulled into Inverary where there was alot of bikers gathered, One of them was heard saying "oh, it must be the gays day out" now this coming from someone who likes to dress in tight leather and have something big and vibrating tucked tighly between his legs just led me to believe that most peoples opinions of what I drive is not relevant whatsoever, I do not judge anyone by what they drive, there are more subsatantial things in life to judge people on. I have had and still do get "hairdresser" Gay comments, they used to bother me, but I moved on, Must of these assholes don't smile when they are driving there P.O.S. but a couple of comments I saw posted on here normally wipes the smirk from their faces.

Firstly the 911 preceeded the 912, which was introduced to fill the gap left when production ceased of the 356, as the 911 was significantly more expensive. However I used the E-Type comparison in that this was remarkably cheap compared to what was existing that had similar performance. Yes the price of the 356/E-Type was more expensive than your average car, but then so is the Boxter.
My point is that it's not Porsche who class the Boxter as a poor mans Porsche it's the guys who own 911's and the ones that can't afford either. Let's be honest here Porsche were laughing all the way to the bank with the sales of non 911 cars.
