Sports button

Hmmm - this debate is taking an interesting? direction now, however, can I just explain my personal preference (and each to his or her own), but when I drive a car on track for a really fast lap I use the kerbs. Despite wearing a six point harness and homologated race seat (because it has to be as I am talking about my experience as a club motorsport competitor) I still move around to some degree as the forces can be quite extreme and sudden, so a throttle pedal that reacts too quickly is, for me, a definite no no ... hope that makes sense and I hope no one takes offence, but that is the reality on the track for me ... :)

Dont think it impacts on anything other than the trottle mapping. On the E46 M3 CSL and CS variants there was the "M" button on the steering wheel which did loosen up ESP ( or whatever it was called)
For once and for all; the sport button in a Z4M only alters the throttle mapping... Nothing more, nothing less! I think it would be great that the sport button would leave the throttle response normal, but loosen up the ESP a little (like the M dynamic mode on a 1M and e92 M3).

This is completely wrong, it also alters facial expressions from :-/ to :)

reading the op i have been trying driving with and without sport button engaged, it really seems to do little more than like exdos says give more throttle opening per amount of pedal travel, at faster speeds in higher gears it sometimes feels you're hooning it a bit nore, but at lower speeds in lower gears i find it pretty rubbish really, quite often if you inadvertantly come off and on the gas slightly , it can on occasion lead to that godawful kangarooing, tho even with sport off this does still happen occasionally, convinced this is to do with the coming off and on the gas very slightly , a quirk of fly by wire maybe. I agree that it would be better if sport also reduced the effect of dsc by some degree as i have noticed recently whilst " playing" that the dsc over nannies the driver, if you gas it out of a corner with dsc on it completely dumps power to almost nothing, allowing no wheelspin at all , yet turn it off and there is zero protection, it is in fact still suprisingly hard to unstick the back end, a testament to the great chassis on the M, way more advanced than the z3m by the way, still not , as much as i love the coupe, decided tho if in some ways as much fun. :driving:

Just a note.. I was reminded this morning that it also Resumes Cruise speed a lot quicker in Sport too. 8) So that's 2 features, ha.

I love the sports button. Too jumpy for around town and I kangaroo from lights and junctions, but when I hit it, Sounds silly but the twitchy response and more up and go attitude it brings changes how you can wrangle the car into shape. It demands to be roughed up a little more in sports mode, in an all or nothing sort of way. Makes for snappier gear changes and more commitment to hitting the floor.. sure to get me into trouble with the plod at some point!

Thread from the dead, but sort of ties in and is tidier than opening a new one...

My only criticism of my beloved Z4MC is the throttle - I don't like how it tries to second guess me. Is there a way to stop this?

The best illustration is when heel-toeing into a corner there's no consistency to the throttle travel required to rev match for the down change! It seems to depend on how hard I drove in the period leading up to the corner. At its most extreme, when I'm peeling off a motorway and into an overhead roundabout, I need to use nearly half the travel to get any blip at all. On the other hand after a series of tight bends the slightest touch of the throttle will over rev it and screw up my down change.

It's infuriating and does spoil the experience of an otherwise perfect car for me. In my old Z3MC, rev matching was an absolute joy.

That doesn't sound normal at all, certainly not my experience. I have no issue heel and toeing in any circumstance, it's always a pleasure to do it. My friend jumped in the other day who hadn't driven the car for 2 years and he had no issues either.

I never drive out of sports mode ^^,

Sam came over to mine and found gust car non responsive
I took him out on mine and then got him to use his on way home
Loved it!

I as said to him, love it, it's ultra responsive in sport and that suits my driving
It also teaches you to drive the car by paying far more attention to the loud pedal, rather than simply pressing down it requires a more involved approach and feathering of the pedal

Trust me I hated the damn thing for ages
Lumpy roo effect going round corners and especially roundabouts
Now it's a pleasure:)
Out of sports I find its lazy and unresponsive
Which is great of on a cruise and want to relax
Try it and use a good pair of driving boots or thin soled trainers and learn to tame the beast

You won't regret it :)

I'm with the dawg - I never drive out of sports mode. The first centimetre of pedal travel does little regardless of sports mode or not, and that does irritate me, but the overall response is improved with it engaged.

Glad not alone ;)

Plus I'm the "aghhhhhh, didn't see him roundabout"
Moment, your gone!

Throttle response in sport is wicked, it's just there so to speak. i like how the car then becomes a live wire. My Mrs says "it's like the car grows teeth".
Obviously in traffic it's gotta go off because the cars a little jerky.
If you want progressive smooth power and haven't pressed the sport button in an M, then pop to your nearest showroom and weigh it in for a 7 series as a sports car isn't for you.

By the was Marc, over summer I've really enjoyed the car and defiantly gotten used to it. I still don't use the sport button, I feel it's easier to feather throttle out of a corner without it, before nailing it. It's also easy enough to be reaching peak in 3rd, I don't need to get there any quicker. I feel I get on with the car well now. I also wonder if the adaptive side of the car has adjusted. I went out last night after meeting with some friends, top down and just went for a blast and it puts the biggest smile on my face.

Problem is now, tyres do 8k, and I just want to keep driving it! I've also done 10k in 10 months, I don't drive on my commute!

Love the comparison;)
Gotta love the button!

Everytime I press the sport button and I have to stop on a traffic light and I have to start again, I bet that the guys behind me think I have Parkinson... At least from what I see it happens also to others.

??
Do you mean it stalls car or you do?
Or do you mean kangaroo fuel visual
As that's what I mean by it teaches you drive it better

I find it much easier to rev match /heel & toe with the sport mode on. I do wish there was an in between mode though because pulling away smoothly can be a pain.
