Sport Button - collapsed in to surroundings

Have had my z4 coupe for a couple of months now, no complaints until a couple of days ago. Pressed the sport button and the button sort of collapsed in to the surrounding aluminium. It still works, but as you can see by the image, it's not looking great! Bought the car under BMW approved used - turns out this is a trim failure so not covered by the warranty. A little annoying...but I'm not getting massively worked up about it.

A quick search reveals I can get a replacement part for about £50 - for a bit of plastic! I may very well glue it in place. Anyone else had this happen and have any suggestions for repair?

I was alarmed at how thick the aluminium was however. For some reason I thought it would be half as thick as that!

Cheers,

Judderman.

Happened to me Saturday! Remove the ash tray/switch module (lift out ash tray and loosen Phillip screw and pull out at an angle) now that's out the way... Reach under to the sports button position and pop the button body through the hole it's fallen down, this will expose the switch and cables, disconnect the cable from the sports button body!

Now fit the surround back to the switch you may have broken tabs.. Don't worry! Marry them together with a small amount of super glue.. And refit! I plastic welded my switch surround and body back together with a soldering iron as I didn't have any glue :)

P.S YOU MAYBE ABLE TO LIFT OUT THE SPORTS BUTTON BODY WITH LONG NOSE PLIERS WITHOUT REMOVING THE SAID ASHTRAY/BUTTON MODULE.

That's a new one - more poor materials splashed about! :headbang:

....or perhaps a heavy hand pushing the switch.... :poke:

Whoops :(

No problem with mine, I wonder if previous owner was a bit heavy handed in the old finger department when pressing it.

oh god... almost a bad as a collapsed arse whole.... lmao...

sorry to laugh but this thread title is fucking awesome!!! i love it!!

@ beedub I couldn't think of the correct name for that bit that the sports button sits in, so apologies for the somewhat clunky title :D

@ Terryvision - thanks for the info there, I will put that to good use!

I do like the cirrus aluminium! As I said in my original post, I didn't think it would be as thick - pity the sports button holder appears so flimsy! It may have been heavy handedness or perhaps it got a knock at some point.

Surely that's covered?-trim failure  -just say you cant press the button without cutting your finger!

That's not a factory-cut hole for the button so maybe that isn't helping as it seems a bit over-sized for the button, which may be moving around a bit and putting more pressure onto the plastic part that has broken.

Are you sure WM, the factory holes aren't round.

I think so Steve, pretty sure mine was a round hole and not cut like that, maybe not :idunno:

Was the cirrus trim available on models without a sport button?

Every picture of a hole in that part of the trim I have ever seen looks like that :?

Mine has cirrus, but came with the sport button. I guess I could prise it out and look... But I would probably end up breaking it

Well according to the folks in Bavarian Belfast it isn't covered. I bought the car in Edinburgh, and the guy I dealt with there seemed to think it would be covered, but as it turns out it isn't. I can fix it myself, but I still feel a bit let down in that it's a failure of the functionality of the car. Having said that, I'm not getting worked up over this, the car is great otherwise.

Sorry but that is absolutely ridiculous that it is not covered... is that the sort of thing BMW "approve"? They should be ashamed!

seriously agree.... how you even excepted that line ill never no.

I have to say I would be kicking up a real fuss about this. I recall somebody had a similar issue when the end of their dipstick fell off, dealer also claimed it was a trim piece.

I don't use the Sport button to activate Sport mode ... I just throw the gear lever over into Sport mode (on an auto). I guess one can't do that in a manual, which may also explain why we have such a button in the Auto model.

BUT, is it not the case that the SPORT button on the Coupe is just the same button location as the ROOF OPEN button on a roadster? If so, how do you activate SPORT mode on a manual roadster?

I'm probably being too laid back about it...I mean, I knew before I went down to the dealer that it did say trim wasn't included and I didn't see how I could argue around that. I don't like confrontation :s

I e-mailed the dealer in Edinburgh (where I bought the car) - they seemed to think it would be covered by my warranty. I'll see what they can do for me.

Krusty - not sure where the roof open button is on the roadster - never sat in one!
