E86 SPORT BUTTON

Just curious to know if it does anything and can or should you feel any dynamic driving differences? I only ask as I was kinda expecting the same change in driving dynamics like is felt in our E89......but to my disappointment the Coupe doesn't feel any different that I can tell. I'd assumed like the E89 I'd fell a noticeable difference in power from the engine..... :(

I'm a bit like you in that I struggle to tell the difference and I wonder if it is because I drive relatively powerful turbo diesels day to day.

My previous 330d and current 640d really come alive when you put them into sport mode where as in my E86 I don't notice any difference.

The sport button in my E86 lights up and I did read somewhere about checking up on a fuse for sport mode but not sure of which.

I was told that it does nothing more than make the throttle response a little quicker - It definitely does nothing to the power output on the E85/86

I can definitely pick up on the change in throttle response when I put mine into sport mode - which does help it feel a bit more reactive when you step on the loud pedal.

Interesting to read about the power assistance change for the steering - hadn’t picked up on that one!

I never noticed it do much In my manual coupe, but in an auto 3.0i it makes a radical difference.

Just got back from a nice drive. Sport button definitely makes the car more responsive. You'll also drop down a gear and hang around in them for much longer through the rev range.

The engine in the 3.0si sings. I've missed this car so much. Feels better than ever and it's freaking buttery smooth through the gears. Got a lot of smiles per gallon tonight.

Thanks for all your comments, seems like I'll have to go for a decent :driving: and re evaluate things, As I previously said, the E89 feels like it's just been given an extra 50 bhp especially when pushed on an overtake, it's not just a more responsive response, you are definitely pushed back more in the seat.......

'Sport' does not unlock more power. Only affects the throttle map AFAIK. I cannot detect any change in steering feel.

So can you tell the difference Liam22? I just cannot tell any difference at all in the Z4 where as the turbo diesel 640 and X3 M40d in our household just fly when in sport mode.

Liam's experience sounds similar to mine - I can definitely feel the throttle response change when I've pressed the sport button, but nothing else.

I also can feel different response to throttle and different shift pattern for auto box. Can’t tell difference in steering.

As said above, it reduces the steering assistance and makes the throttle less progressive.

I don't mind the steering in sport mode but the throttle is awful, very difficult to be smooth and to heel and toe.

LOL - each to their own. I enable Sport mode *only* to assist with H&T. But then I'm blipping to >4000rpm most of the time, so it needs a good prod.

Sports button makes a huge difference for me on my 3.0i manual. Steering wheel is heavier/sharper, throttle is more responsive as mentioned by others. I also noticed my clutch activation point is a bit shorter? this was an odd one that i need someone to clear up. the car is undrivable at start/stop traffic with sport mode because the clutch activation confuses me. On the highway, its great. i can cycle through gears much quicker. I rarely use it though, since i drive at a normal pace most of the times.

City driving with sport mode is also a bit more annoying for me due to the change in steering map

I should've said "makes it more difficult for me".
As you say, each to their own, it's different when you're racing and chasing lap times like yourself.
I'm just getting into track days so may try it out again.

I tried using it once or twice on my 3.0Sis and it didn't seem to make any difference, so I gave up using it.
