Splitting 108 Alloys

Hi all,

I put my z4 coupe sport in to get the 108s refurbished, diamond cut etc. The guys in the restorers couldn't get some of the bolts out and stopped the job as they didn't want to risk snapping the bolts as some of them were stuck fast. I'd rather they did this that snap any bolts and we did discuss it before hand.

I'm pretty sure the wheels are heated up in the factory in order to connect the outer rim to the inner, and obviously loctite is on the bolts.

I'm gutted as I really want to get them refurbed back to factory finish.

Does anyone know what temperature they need to be heated to and for how long in order to get the bolts out successfully? Also, I think they would need to be heated again after refurb in order to connect them back together safely and properly (ie factory).

I'm based in Merseyside.

Thanks guys

Ian

Ive had 2 sets split now with only one sheared head & no need for heat ? What method is the guy using to remove ? Gun or wench ?

He's using an expensive Torx bit and torque wrench. I can understand his concern to be honest. I'd rather he was honest and conservative about it than end up snapping the bolts if you know what I mean.

His oven only get's warm enough to bake the paint....

Sorry, just checked and they are not torx bolts I don't think, not sure what type they are but he said it was a special kit he had so I assume it was the right tool. None are rounded off

I checked with BBS before my refunbisher did mine, no heat needed just soak in wd40. He did this they all came out, I had bought 10 spares just in case so have them if you need some. He did say the company he worked for before used to shear them and glue the Heads back on so the customer didn't know!!! This was why he left them and set up on his own. Only charged me £50 a wheel and have them 2 tone body colour inners and silver outer.
