Speed Camera detection iPhone apps

I feel a bit exposed without protection so to speak, so was looking at the iPhone solutions.

Seems to be a fair few about, anyone got experience / recommendations?

Tomtom have an app for speed cameras (super easy to use), I got it when they were offering a year free, not sure if they're still offering that.

Trapster is another alternative.

I have downloaded the TomTom app (free for the year), but the reviews are very poor. I guess there is nothing to stop me running multiple apps at the same time to see which one performs bet.

Been using cameralert which seems basic but provides a lot of the mobile speed camera locations

+1 although you will need to buy a subscription to get the updates

Have used the tomtom freebie - seems to work well for me, and I have the phone in a spec dock so no direct line of sight - just remember to keep the wireless active so you get a good location set.

CamerAlert uses the PocketGPSWorld camera database, which is probably the most comprehensive (and most frequently updated) of the databases. It's also available for Android and you can use it alongside any navigation app (e.g., Waze, TomTom, OSM, CoPilot, etc).

Doesn't matter how good or how pretty the app is, if it doesn't know where the cameras are it's not going to be of much use ...

Anything to give you a fighting chance is good though.

I usually use my tomtom along side cameralert. Waze is very good in areas that people use it as your replying on other people's updates to keep you updated where trouble is. Some places you can see loads and loads of people on it. Others nothing at all for miles.

I noticed what I think is a bug with this - although take your point about some areas dont have many people about - I am in Exmouth and this is true.

What I found was that if I made a call then the app seemed to lose connection so other people and alerts were not seen until i ended my journey and restarted it - that said all the reported cameras still show up its just the alerts and viewing other people on the road that does not work - would be interested if anyone else encounters this issue.

That said - I am not sure how the other apps work - do they pick up a policeman with a camera on the side of the road? or a van on a bridge? - don't think they do - Waze will if someone else has just reported it and also lets you know about potholes etc etc. I have been up to reading last week travel up on Monday and back on Friday and it worked a treat - and it alerted me to several issues - not that it would have been a problem as I was travely at 70 with cruise on seeing what MPG I could get - round trip was 37.1 which I was impressed with

If anyone does try out or is already using Waze add me on facebook - Richard Staniford - it would be good to have some z4 buddies on waze and aide the "spotted" posts ;)

Just tested tomtom and it was not great. Just before a known camera where I was testing it on it had a no network message on the screen and it did not alert me. I stopped, quit the app and restarted it an the it alerted me.

It still showed me the speed whilst it said it had no network. My phone had strong 3G though so not sure what the message was about.

I am pretty sure Waze will notify you of cameras when you dont have 3g but only those on the map not those that the community have just elerted such as mobile cameras

Strange thing was that I did have 3G, I had data fine and GPS speed indication was still working as well.

Great thing about the apps is that you can try and throw away ...

Just looked at the T&C from Waze which I was not happy with. It will record all your journeys and is linked to your account (i.e. you) whether you create a user name or not.

Reason I am not happy about that thought is that the Dutch government have forced Apps manufacturers to provide all data they hold so it can be checked for employee benefit purposes. This was for parking apps where you pay with your app for parking and they are employer provided, they want to check to see how many private journeys are made with a company van for example.

The fact that they can ask that information means it is a small step to asking about your trip info, i.e. how fast did you drive where and so on … I don't trust any government to not abuse that information.
