Speed bumps

I am taking the girlfriend out tonight in the z4 for the first time(she doesnt even know ive got it) & some of the areas I would like to go have speed bumps, are these an issue with the car been so low & do I need to avoid them?

You just need to go sloooooooowly. More slowly than you are used to. And be off the brakes before you get to the bump, else the front of the car will be lower than normal and could catch. Should be fine

And have a great night, she'll love it :D

The other problem with speed bumps is when the wheels drop down the far side, the suspension compresses, causing the undercarriage to bounce off the top of the bump. (Unless you are going incredibly, painfully slow.) This can be avoided by going over the bump at an angle. With only one wheel going over the bump at a time, the car will not drop like it does when both wheels are doing the same thing at the same time. The car also does not rise as much whilst going over, smoothing the entire process. This is useful even in cars with plenty of clearance. Though you will look to be overly self-centred doing this in an econo-box.

I left foot break over speed bumps to maintain a good balance. Probably better to just drive slowly though, with the GF on board. Certainly not a big problem in the Z.

No problem in comparison to my scirocco I can fly over these! Seriously though, yes go very slowly compared to another everyday car you may be used to.

Thanks for the advice folks, I ended up taking a different route though so as to avoid the speed bumps. Would rather test it when in the car on my own first.

There is a standard spec for speed bumps and cushions - As I recall its 100mm - I started a petition in our area to stop a stupid councilor installing them on a hill from the estate! Again from memory ground clearance is only 110mm so that advice of slow is not bad!!

I found some on a private lane on the way up to Kent College's rugby pitches last weekend that were higher than 100mm... And only 200mm across. Nasty, scrapy little b*stards - not happy, even one wheel at a time didn't stop some underside scrapes :x
