Spacers with 224’s

Hi All,

Anyone running spacers with 224s and stock suspension? Feels like the wheels could be pushed out a touch. Maybe 10mm spacers all round. Has anyone done it?

Mine has 12mm or 15mm spacers on to clear the Brembo brakes, but is also slightly lower on Bilstein B16 suspension.

On a standard E85, 224s are maxed out in the rear arches. M must have a different rear track.

The rear axle is totally different which is why 224 rears are 9J ET30 where non-Ms typically had 8.5J ET50 rears.

Hence 224s are a tight fit on a non-M because just the offset sits them 20mm further out, plus a bit wider rim.

I reckon there would be room for a spacer on an M, but haven't tried it as I'm not a fan of spacers.

I used to have 10mm spacers all round with stock tyres and suspension, with no rubbing no matter how the car was driven. Now with the same spacers and a b12 kit on 235/40 & 265/35 tyres there's too much space. It would easily take the 15/12mm spacers as above, in fact I might just treat myself.

So for stock suspension you think 10mm all round is suitable? I was even thinking 5mm.

It worked for me but I don't think you can get Hubcentric spacers in less tan 10mm.

I had 12mm spacers all round previously and no rubbing front or rear, could have probably gone 15mm to really push it

Don’t want the tyres poking out of the arches. Just want to be right on the edge

Back in 2009 (when I last ran 224s with stock suspension on a regular basis), I had 12mm spacers all round. Clearance was fine with no rubbing, even when cornering hard or going over kerbs on track.

Another related question… I’m getting some new michellins for the 224s and wondering about upping the tyre size?

235/40
265/35

Any thoughts?

The last tyres I fitted to my 224 rears were 265/40. At that time, I was running CSLs on the road and using my 224s only as track wheels. Back then, I had Eibach lowering springs with stock dampers. I still experienced no rubbing with 12mm spacers under loads that would difficult to reproduce in normal road use.
I’m fairly sure that I have used 235 width front tyres on my 224s at some point, but the tyres currently fitted to the front wheels are stock sizes with a date code of June 2008!*

*Needless to say, the wheels have been in storage for almost a decade and a half and I have no plans to use the tyres!

Entirely off topic, but what ramps are those? I was looking to get a set because the closest rent-a-ramp to me isn't open at evenings or weekends, and I *hate* putting cars on jack stands. those look great

Bit late, but I have 224 on my new M with spacers at the rear. 10 mm by the looks of it.

I'm running front 245/40 18 track tyres on mine with a very square sidewall and get a bit of rubbing but it's very minimal, only when really loaded up on track - nothing like you'd experience on the road

Great bit of kit: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/176646721401?shprz=EBAY_GB_131090&_ul=GB&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=20006&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338986375&customid=Cj0KCQiAvP-6BhDyARIsAJ3uv7Za_mgKocRXa-uFvmD_HSTz4FgRNqyEDJ5ZRPddBZD-mjvqTtgBomIaAusxEALw_wcB&gbraid=0AAAAADcddnaok_9X_EE0RdXjBrCaVMXbH&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiAvP-6BhDyARIsAJ3uv7Za_mgKocRXa-uFvmD_HSTz4FgRNqyEDJ5ZRPddBZD-mjvqTtgBomIaAusxEALw_wcB

Nice one. What about the fronts?

Mine came on Eibach springs with 12mm spaces all round.

I normally wouldn't bother but car drives great with no rubbing and I quite like the slightly more aggressive stance

Digging up this thread. I fitted 12mm spacers all round on my Z4M which has (as far as I know) stock suspension/wheels/tyre sizes. Getting rubbing on full lock up front now, which (according to what I have read in this thread and elsewhere) is unusual.

It may be that my alignment is off, but I don't think the camber can be that far out with stock suspension. Anyone else had this problem?
