Sound Generator Modification

I've had the small piece taken out since I owned the Zed. Was messing around the other day and thought Ill take the other end out. I was laughing when I saw how long it was! Went out for a drive and IT SOUNDS AWESOME.

Cue a day later and I booted it with the girlfriend in the car.. She pooped herself :D

I just pulled the cabin end out and only found this smaller piece of foam (I was expecting the larger piece??)

Not surprisingly, it made little difference :(

I wonder if my foams are swapped around. My neighbour was spying through their window so I think I need to wait until the morning :D

Doesn't look like the standard foam to me - there should be two black foam sections that are circular and a neat fit

My cabin end was lighter black/grey than the engine end, and whilst the engine end is smaller, it is denser foam. That looks nothing like either of them though, as Ranski says :?

Mines a 2007 coupe. I've only found one other say they had something similar ... hmmm it certainly denser than I was expecting. Will check the other end

Mine's a 2007 as well and my foam is exactly the same as yours so maybe they changed spec somewhere along the way.

Cheers Colin!

I've just taken the longer black piece out from the engine side and OMG :D

Ears bleed a little at 6-7k revs as it resonates so I will try putting the smaller grey foam back in the cabin/bulkhead side and see if that's a good balance.

^^^^ this is what I ended up doing and it seems just right. I think when I posted about this a while ago I used exactly the same expression about bleeding ears

Was a little disappointed with the audible experience compared to my focus ST and concluded it was a more civilized car, but now I'm grinning like a cheshire cat and want to go out again. My father-in-law is just gob smacked and now wants to buy one :D

EDIT: Ok we've found the best compromise, long black foam cut in half with glove box open

I've just tried this but have a question.

Both ends of the tube came out easily but when I went to put the end that goes into the car it didn't click in?

Does it need to click in or does it just go in the hole?

Not tried it yet as I want to make sure I've put it back together correctly first.

Cleaning out the air filter today I noticed where the sound generator comes into the cabin

Circular hole to the right

Remove the plate which sits in the footwell, this then exposes the above wires. There is also a plastic cover which covers the filter, just pull it down to remove

It won't click, it makes you think its not in properly and I like others keep checking it hasnt fallen out :D

That makes me feel loads better :)

I might try and locate it from inside the cabin just to make 100%.

It sounds great but mine seems a little different to everyone else's. It seems to peak noise wise at 5000rpm then tail off.

Just did this, took out the foam closest to the bulkhead - this could be done after step two (maybe I have small hands). Big difference! Sounds much more interesting.

I too have just removed the foam insert. Only had to pull the pipe out, no flat head required :D Much better in the higher rev range! Thanks!

Got my Z4 today and fancied doing this mod straight away!

Pulled the tube out at the cabin end and removed the small piece of foam from within. When I pulled the tube out it felt like it unclipped from something. When I went to put it back in though it's just a loose hole..... Is this right? I'm guessing no nasties could be suck in now the foams removed?

Certainly sounds better but I want more!! Think I might remove the foam from the other end as well :)
