 :poke:

It can be ball-achingly tight.. just gentle but firm persuasion, and a bit of rotation, should do the job

one word - WOW!

best free mod you can do!

did this on my n52 coupe 3.0

reminds me a little of my astra coupe boy racer days haha

nice sound though, piece of piss to remove, just pulled the tube off cabin end, and pulled the little bit of foam out, happy days!

cheers for the advice.

I did this yesterday and removed quite a big piece of foam after undoing the jubilee clip leading to the sound generator itself, so i didn't pull the end off at the cabin. havn't noticed the slightest bit of difference tbh :? So i'm gonna put it back in and pull the end off the cabin some time this week and see if that does anythin

Did this last weekend, what a differance! took both out, WHAT A NOISE!!!

one major downside, fuel consumption has gone up since......... purely down to heavy foot :driving:

Just taken the cabin foam out (thanks, guys, for all the tips etc - really helpful) - now all I want is some decent weather so that I can bathe mi' lugs. At the moment Thumper (anyone know why it's named "Thumper" ?) is sitting in the garage getting bored.

Hi Baracus

Did you end up putting the foam back in and trying the cabin end? The reason I ask is that I just acquired a 3.0si and did this mod at the weekend. I too have noticed next to zero difference by removing a big piece of foam from the engine/jubilee clip end of the pipe. I'm wondering if it is worth having a go at the cabin end instead, or whether that is a smaller piece of foam?

It is strange because my last car was a '03 2.5i SE and I retro-fitted the sound generator to that car. When I took out the big piece of foam I noticed a HUGE difference immediately. Both pieces out was extreme, especially when accelerating on the motorway at speed (too boomy IMO).

However I was expecting the 3.0si generator to be even better than the 2.5 due to the different design. Although at idle with foam in it sounds more gruff than the 2.5, so far removing the foam has been disappointing. My 2.5 with foam removed sounded much louder than the 3.0si!

Does anyone know on the 3.0si which is the piece of foam to remove to get the best effect? Cabin end or engine end of the pipe?

thanks guys

Hi, I havn't had chance to eve lok at it since due to work and i sent my car back into the garage i got it from to have the gears sorted out. I do intend doing it though asap and i'm pretty sure removig the other end will do the job, i just think removing the generator (filter) end foam didnt do anything cos it's still blocked at the cabin end which is why we havn't noticed much

Just wanted to say thanks for the insightful and easy to follow how-to.

Did this little mod last night.

Pulled the big piece of foam out (wasn't expecting it to be that big, I felt like a magician) and it sound great. Higher revs is when you really notice it. Not overpowering, but a nice grunt.

Forget that actually, have now popped it back in - too loud for me :?

Might take the smaller piece out and see how that sounds.

I've taken both out and can't see the problem. OK, it's pretty loud at wide throttle with the roof up (opening a window slightly makes it a little less extreme) but roof down it's awesome - sounds like a V8 Vantage (feels pretty much as fast too actually). Besides, it only really screams at 5.5k+. At normal revs/throttle openings it still sounds very quiet, even with no foam at all. Gotta be both out for me.

Great guide/information.

I carried out the 'no tools' mod removing the small bit of foam by the bulkhead. Very quick and simple for a brilliant soundtrack when pushing on! Even better is the fact that normal driving is unaffected, perfect.

If you're thinking about doing it just do it, thanks for the guide

James.

Oh my God! Best free mod ever

I did this to my car a day after buying it (2004 3.0 manual). I removed the big piece of foam nearest the cabin. For normal driving the car doesn't sound any different but bury the throttle and noise city, I bloody love it. Its a good party trick for scaring passengers too
