everybody is different, if we weren't we'd all be driving the same car, how boring would that be

Canny have that, I’d need to keep the same car :poke:

Will’s car he can do what he wants and having spoken too and met him he’s got a good enough sense of humour to laugh if the comments and banter. He tee’d that up with his title of the topic

Agreed, thats why I expected him to comment, can't imagine a world full of Vauxhall Calibra's
As suggested, he may actually be out there living a life, not watching his thread all day long.
However, it's also possible that he noted, in between the 95% rational, honest opinions (mostly qualified by the acceptance that he can do what he likes to his car), that one or two comments were starting to look for an argument for no real reason, and therefore decided to leave it well alone.

Apologies, had to go for a long drive to the Cotswolds yesterday to test out the effect of my modifications on performance, so didn't look on here until this morning. The reduced weight from debadging has definitely improved the 0-60 time by at least 0.2 seconds, and the M badge, despite re-adding weight, has added minimum 20bhp.

Not offended by any responses, I've chosen to share something that I know will be controversial and asked for opinions, so all comments are appreciated. I was very aware it might wind a few people up!

In terms of positioning, I tried to base it on the e89 Z4M, which I thought had it on the left hand side slightly below the BMW badge? The curve of the boot on the e89 makes this difficult so I've had to compromise and that might eventually be a reason for removing it.

The car now has fewer ///M badges than when it left the factory, so I wouldn't agree that I'm trying to pretend it's something it isn't - although I appreciate the specific significance of having one of those badges on the back. If the 35is had been brought to market a few years later it would have been called a M35i anyway, and I'm not sure how much input the M division has into the M-light cars these days.

The car has a M engine under the bonnet, so the M badge isn't entirely dishonest. With that in mind, I think the car is still much less guilty of trying to be something it's not than a hell of a lot of cars today. A colleague picked up a brand new 3 series last week - covered in M badges and visual performance touches, twin exhausts etc. It's a 320i.

[ref]tiglon[/ref], glad you made it back without being thrown into prison by the badge police.
I guess they couldn't catch you, with all that added power.

Will, it’s always good when a performance mod works and you can feel the difference immediately

I think your problem might be the badge is too big for the shape and curves for the E89 boot lid. Would if fit along the flat edge at the bottom where it meets the bumper or is there a smaller version that might sight on that flat surface?

Maintaining the purity of badging on cars is important to some but it’s funny to see others being playful with identifying what they are driving. Many years ago I pulled up behind a Ford Sierra and had to do a double take on the boot lid. The comedy badge looked the business but it actually said ‘Sierra Codsworth’ I was still smiling about that much later

The one that made me really laugh were the Chrysler 300's that are rebadged & re-grilled as Bentleys! there was one on my mates estate, really sad

I was having a meal in a pub, and my Dad says “Did you see the Bentley in the carpark?”

I said: “Dad. Thats a Chrysler 300c, people are doing that now”

He was confused.

I think the M badge could sit where the Z4 Badge does, like how the Z4 Coupe has an M where the Z4 logo would be.

I don’t see why BMW didnt do an e89M. They made a 3 series M convertible (E93) and also an M4 hard top convertible.

It would be a highly collectible car, a good example 35is still trades for about 27-30k!

A proper ///M badge adds at least 30 mph though. :D

Thanks for the positioning suggestions Andy and Deepsea - I do have 2 smaller m badges coming that were for the sides but I probably won't bother with, might be easier to get one of those on the back in a better spot.

The only rebadging I've done before was a supercharged badge from a range rover on the back of my 65bhp £150 Astra as a joke many years ago. :poke:

The previous ownwer of mine debadged it, ripped the bloody paint off the front wing and touched it up with what looked like a bog brush. Whilst I waited to have an oportunity to get it sorted I bought some cheap chinese SDrive 35iS badges to cover it up. I liked the debadged look but not the bodge, after my little accident, the front end was repainted and badges replaced with official BMW ones so now it looks perfect although I wouldv'e been more than happy not to have them. Being silver the mirrors don't stand out so not obvious whats under the bonnet, not that it matters to anybody else cos it's my car.

Badges make difference to me - I want to keep the car as close to original as I can so they are staying on mine - especially after what happened to yours :(

Same, but I'm happy with mine, whilst prices have gone up you'll need a LOT of money to convince me to let it go know even though I believe once this nutty lockdown is over I expect it to be worth similar to what I paid for it

Prices will drop but think it will be over a 24 month period so I will be looking for a 35i or 35iS when that happens for certain.

Think the black onto side would look quite good to be honest with darker wheels

Morning, tiglon. As well as adding a rear 'M' badge, have you painted your mirror backs? One of the distinguishing features of the 35iS is that they're usually usually silver, of course, and not body coloured.

And in the interior, doesn't yours have the 'M' steering wheel and kick plates, all badged?

I thought the Orange 35is didn’t have silver mirror caps?

Oh do keep up old chap. 5th post on page 2.
I shall have to start calling you 'California' if you get any more hours behind. :poke: :D

I think Badge removal started in Germany - I believe to hide the perceived “stigma “ of buying a low spec / base model that doesn’t boast M / Turbo / Sport etc

Just buy the best you can sensibly afford and be happy!

Fixed that for you

Sadly I don't have a photo, but there's a red e89 23i not far from me that has 32i on the sides. You lot would love it :poke:

As I am sure you are aware BMW only put 'M' badges on the rear of 'M' cars. Would I be correct in thinking that you want other people to think you are driving an 'M' car hence the badge on the rear? This is not a sarcastic ask, just curious.

Has it got an Alpina badge on the rear as well

Seems that people are driving the same car. I couldn't believe it when I saw 4 different Misano blue G29's with black wheels during a 2 hour period today.
