Craig, I'm really sorry to hear about your situation. I'd want to beat them to a pulp as well.
Short of that, I wanted to share with you a bad renter situation that was resolved this year in my own neighborhood. I live in a quiet middle class neighborhood, with a large rental house nearby. The owner is a slumlord, renting to the worst kind of people. He lives elsewhere on a golf course, so he couldn't care less. Last year, it was a drug dealer. This year, it was these people, on government benefits, unmarried, SEVEN kids by different fathers, and proud of it. They'd brag about not owning a car (though there was always one parked there that they used), because, they said, if they owned a car, the government would make them get a job and end their benefits. They'd throw loud parties on weeknights with 50 people in attendance, sometimes including a bonfire in the backyard, and park their cars in all the neighbors' yards. The morning after the parties, we neighbors, before going to work to pay taxes for them to live there for free, had the privilege of picking up the garbage they threw in our yards. This went on for weeks, before we as a neighborhood got together and demanded a meeting with the chief of police. Many of us went to the meeting with the chief, his captain and a few officers that patrol our area. They were, of course, familiar with the house, due to the many calls about the place over the last few years. As a group, we came up with a plan, and executed it. Anytime any of us heard noise over there, we would call other neighbors, and then all call in from our own homes to the police, to report the issue. The police wanted to be sure they were covered and couldn't be accused of unlawfully harrassing the renters, which was the point of so many neighbors calling in to the dispatch each time. Then, regardless of the hour, we would all call the landlord on his home and/or cell phone, which I obtained and shared throughout the neighborhood. Suddenly, he became interested in our problem. The police came out many times, with the Captain himself making at least 2 visits, and promising that his next visit would end with someone going to jail. After repeated visits by the police and the disgruntled landlord, they moved out. We had to endure many threats from the renters and a few inept officers that responded to our calls but failed to clear the partygoers, but within 10 months, our strategy worked. The key is to not be the only neighbor calling the police every time you see the undesirables acting up. And, you all must call EVERY time you see them drinking in the street, tearing up fences, etc. The more you let them get by with, the worse their behavior will become. At least that was my experience. They feel like they are untouchable. You have to take them down a peg, as a neighborhood. I considered moving, because it was getting so bad, but I'm I glad I stayed and fought it out. The house has been vacant since they moved out a few months ago. The landlord knows we are done with his BS.
Now, they never damaged my car, but I lived with constant worry that they would, especially after the threats. I began to park it inside my fenced-in backyard, where my very large dog roams. It's a pain, but so far so good.
I hope they get those b******s for something, whether it's for your car or the next crime they commit.
