Is your car battery fully charged? (I think that BMW even recommend having the car on a charger throughout the procedure).
Do you have the car's ignition key in (I think) Position 2? Or even the engine running?
Are you sure that the connecting cable is making good contact in the OBD socket? (Mine has a blue light which comes on).

Check that in the settings for SSS (in vmware) that the memory is set to recommended.

The blue light came on with my cable too. The dry joint still buggered up everything. If INPA is working, I'd be inclined to check the virtual machine settings
I'm going to zedfest and will bring my setup so you can check cables if you want. Having taken mine apart I know they are simply a modified vagcom cable, and the mod is crap quality.
