Softtop Motor :(

1st day of sun last week and my softtop would not go back up again :(

Thought it was a bit slow going down but now it dosent work at all - the top unlatches fine but no noise or movement from the hydraulic motor.

Have just been outside and checked the drains on both sides and they are fine so am a bit gutted to say the least. I have always made sure that the roof stays clean from debris but may seem that it makes no difference to motor longevity.

One question for those in the know - this is a August 2007 ///M I thought they had sorted the problems with the motors on the facelifts ?

Anybody want to hold my hand at BMW next week ?

Are you getting a flashing red light or is it orange?

Have you done the usual check of parcel shelf/micro switch in the boot?

If it was the micro switch there would be nothing whatsoever at the button. As the latches are undoing, it's not the MS.

If it's not been used for some time it might need a bit of help. Also lube the joints (not with WD40)

It's best to raise an lower even through winter just to keep everything moving. (Unless you have a hard top)

i have 2006 m and mine just packed up last week .my son is a bmw tec over the phone said it was the pump checked it on the sunday electrically it was ok so pump change tomorrow afternoon .

Yes isn't the microswitch as suggested looked at that as well as controls in boot.

Will certainly be pushing for goodwill gesture from BMW

Also, as suggested top is used over winter to keep things moving and drains are checked for for blockage regularly

Just bad luck I suppose

i have got mine for £280 with discount off my son and fitted free ,but it is a git to fit i have heard bills of £800 from bmw dont no how true that is

£280 from a dealer, extra £50 ish for the soundproofing housing, About 4-5 hours work, piece of cake to do.
Newer models starting to fail now, It had to happen as they too get older.
They stuck a bit more silicon on the newer ones....I reckon that was the fix

I cant remember the outcome of a poll/survey on here asking about motor failure against parking in a garage or left outside.

Don't think there were any failures amongst cars that had been parked inside all their life. A lot of people had bought second hand and did not know if the car had been parked outside prior.

Ah

Hmm, shame the facelift ones are starting to go.. mines been inside 85% of it's life but it's a 2006 and I've used the roof a LOT.. maybe I won't cancel the warranty afterall.

I reckon you'd get somewhere with goodwill on a 2007 car though.

btw if the boot microswitches arent set correctly you'll get an orange light on the roof switch, not nothing. You should get a flashing red light when it's working, but I guess if it unlatches the fuses can't be gone.

I had a loose connection once inside the inspection panel behind the passenger seat which also stopped the roof (with flashing red light) .. had a week of doing it manually in france before I worked it out.

Good luck

result :D

BMW 100% Goodwill on parts - got them to knock the £96 investigation charge off and £380 inc VAT went and collected it yesterday.

Very happy with that and dealer dare I say it :D

time now unfortunatly that I may need to say my good bye's though :(

Had the car now for about 2.5 years and have had

2 x Clutches
1 x Vanos Unit
1 x Roof Motor

All scary costs considering I have only done about 14000 miles in it...

Fair play to BMW though, most of this has been done under goodwill and warranty so they will support their products out of warranty.

Still look back every time I park her and still get the rush of excitement from the power so she will be missed
