Just because something is more expensive doesn’t automatically make it better in all aspects, there’s plenty of owners who may appreciate the improved fuel economy of the n20 range or the lower tax bracket it falls into because of its lower emissions, it’s also a fact that the lighter weight (and where it’s located) results in a more agile handling car.
These are all facts as well but I’m not calling it a superior car, there’s a z4 for all tastes and no need to bad mouth any of them :thumbsup:

Folk are certainly touchy on here, it's not as if I said it was inferior because it has 2 cylinders less than a BMW should have :poke:

The point I was making was that the OP will probably be disappointed going from 35iS which has a sweet 6 cylinder engine and higher power, DCT, adaptive suspension, etc to a lower powered 28i which does not have these things.

Can you image if someone has had a Z4M for just 6 weeks and likes it and then they bought a 2.0 Z4 E85 as a replacement - do you think they would be happy with it after the Z4M :thumbsdown:

To get back to the original query posted, I have a 28i and I love it !
Changed to non run flats and fitted Smarttop so far.
For me the model spec was important more than which 2 litre engine I bought (coz of the opportunity to remap)
When you are looking at used, the difference between the specs narrows a significant amount in terms of price.
It just so happened that I got what I wanted with the 28i at the time.
I thought I would have resisted getting it remapped, but I'm having it done next Wednesday !

You had a beauty in one of the best colours too.


The 4 bangers are s**t,you wont be happy after the effortless speed of the twin turbo 6..

Plus,bought shrewdly the 35is being the flagship model can hold decent value. Why buy something that there is thousands of when you can buy a rare model ?

The DCT is a fine gearbox,they can get a bit sloppy if they learn your driving patterns and your not really using as intended,but keep on the latest software updates and they are a brilliant gearbox.

I had a 35is,and a 3.0,and a Z4MR and a Z4MC and currently have an F type with the 8 speed ZF,and out of the Z4's the 35is was the best all rounder by far.. Quicket than the M cars but cost half the price to run.

Well perhaps a bit harsh,but compared to the better models they are....

The Z4 is a weekender for most,an inspirational car that many will probably own once in their lifetime..

Who wants a 4 banger in that scenario..... :thumbsdown:

I would ask yourself the question what did you like about your 35iS?

Was it the power and noise of the twin turbo and exhaust, was it the interior, the way it drove, the DCT gearbox, the adaptive suspension, etc.

Then ask yourself are those things the same in the 28i or worse or better?

If the answers are what you liked in the 35iS are the same in the 28i, then buy a 28i :driving:
 
Get the car that you really like the look of and stop trying to rationalise. Cars are emotional purchases. If there is a 2.0L that ticks the boxes for you then get it. But always be mindful that once you have the car, will you have a monkey on your back saying "you should have got the 35is?". Only you can answer that question dude.
 
I have a sdrive20 m sport

All the bells and wistles except the nav (42 years in logistics, i can read a sign post).

A full remap and ditching the run flats this sping.

Purchased Oct 2018 for £ 15500 @ 36K miles.

Apart from someone slaming the boot closed and breaking the lock barrel (Soft close) no issues.

Real head turner, had a couple of guys cross the road the other evening in front of me, one of them head still turned walked into a lamp post :rofl:

:rofl: :rofl: Yep even at 10 years of age this car sure is a head turner but yet to see someone do that! It puts some newer cars to shame.

To the OP, if you liked your 35is (other than the issues obviously) then I suspect you'd never be quite as happy with any other E89 model.

I replaced my daily driver 325i with a 330i last year, and really wouldn't want to replace my 330i with any lesser model - it would just be a constant disappointment. :(

Anyway I hope you find something you enjoy. :thumbsup:
 
Thoughts as of now. I will keep an open mind but if a near identical car came up to the one that broke I woud be interested. That car had a lot of kit and for someone who loves all that stuff another car would have to have the same. I might have wait a while for something to appear. It night not but you never know.

Confirmed.

All the people stating that a 28i "remapped" is just as good, has better handling etc are spouting absolute garbage. No different to the 335i guys who claim their car is better than an M3, or a the modded Focus ST that is better than the RS.
 
Serious post......promise..... :D

I tried a 28i and found it too light on the front end, with the roof on the rear end already upsetting the apple cart the 100kg difference in engines upset said cart even more. I only know this as I’ve had a few 35is’s, if you haven’t tried one you perhaps wouldn’t notice the difference, but honestly it was quite pronounced. I honestly think the E89 handles better with the heavier 6 pot to counter the weight at the back. As for which engine mapped or standard, gearbox etc, is best I’m not getting into it, I like the DCT very much, I also like the manual in the E89. Each model has its merits, fuel economy, tax, power, tune ability etc, etc, but imho putting everything in a pot the 35i or 35is are the ones to go for based on handling, which in stock form is rather crap, more than anything. These cars are not sharp tools, and unless fuel economy and VED is high on the list the big engines produce the best balanced car. Just my tuppence. :thumbsup:

That was my problem with what Pbondar said. I think the purpose of a forum is sharing knowledge and when someone overtly posts falsehoods I feel the need to call them out.

Might not have helped the OP much but it prevents anyone else from picking up the stories and repeating them as gospel because it was written on the internet.

The reaction to being called out is a bit shocking though, not what you'd expect from someone of his age!
