So this is how they build a chimney these days.

The builders on here will probably laugh but I’ve never seen this before.
Are these chimneys just decorative features now?

yes, they can be. couple of friends bought a new build maybe 5 years ago that had fake chimneys on - i suspect to keep with the village aesthetic.

I put two on the house I built a few years backIMG_7747.JPG

They are made of fibreglass, with brick "slips" stuck on (slivers of brick about 25mm thick). I bolted them to the trusses with M14 coach screws. You'd do well to tell that they are fake, though.

Your house would look so very wrong without chimneys.
Fake units do the job nicely
They were supposed to be made to be able run a flue inside for the stove. As you can see, that didn't work out! Turns out the manufacturers thought it was going to be a gas flue, not a solid fuel one. Bad communication but they were on by then!
Also there was no way the council were going to allow it without "chimneys". They call the shots, not me!

That's quite an achievement, and it looks stunning.

Thanks. I am very proud of that house. I am not a builder but built it pretty much myself. Sold it 15 months ago, and it's now funding my car obsession! :D

Houses and cars float my boat!
Problem is one makes money, the other loses it! :o

It looks great in both those photos! Seems a shame you sold it, but at least the proceeds are going to a deserving cause.

I wish I had found the opportunity to do something like that - the nearest I got was building a garage in the late 90s, but I really enjoyed it.

But you live in Sandhurst, your garage will still be worth more than that house! I'm from the home counties. I moved to the fens for this very reason.

I doubt it somehow, this is one of the cheaper bits of Berkshire. And the garage was in Sutton, so even sillier prices.

Splitting up with Mrs Tidy came at a price - I don't have a garage any more. :(
