So I've started the Vanos work UPDATED

I'm planning to change thermostat, belts and waterpump at same time, just in case.

At this moment, biggest question mark is how to raise engine? In Midhurstmans link would be otherwise great, BUT..... you cannot do it in LHD, because of steering column :(
When Vanos and thermostat is removed, does waterpump come out easier?
 
waiting on my bits to do this. just a small delay from i6 as i ordered disa bits too. for the cost <£100 i would say anyone with a slight rattle and 50+K get it done. the disa bit looks even easier. took 10 mins to get the disa unit off the car to check.

Hi,
I removed the R/H engine mount nut and jacked up the engine about 3-4 CMS with a trolley jack under the Crankshaft pulley... worked OK

Big improvement in the lower rev. Range and fuel efficiency is up :D

Do you mean, you put jack under oil pan? Or where?

Local garage just destroyed my sons car aluminium oil pan. They lifted engine and jack slipped.

No, I put it under the forward crankshaft pulley, my jack has a rubber pad so no problem, I saw that the sump is Aluminium so didn't risk it !
 
So you lifted directly from pulley. Is'nt there a risk damaging pulley?
I haven't seen engine underside.

Sorry to ask stupid questions :)
 
If you look at the pulley you can make your own decision , it's big and bulky I didn't see any risk of damaging it, and it wasn't damaged after I was finished :wink:
 
How about that lower radiator hose, do you have to remove it to access / remove vanos unit?
I am not so afraid to do that, but if so i have to empty radiator first.

I think i got all necessary parts? + Gasket sealant& loctite threadlocker. AC belt is already replaced.. :)

Just removed Vanos :)

First took sensor out, but it did not help, so I had to remove rad hose (I'm replacing thermostat, so I have to remove it anyway) . Then I removed one cable fastener and took Vanos unit out. Did not have to pry, lift/lower engine or anything, there was enough room. I just might be lucky :D
 
Congrulations for success with vanos removal phase.
So i will empty radiator first.. thanks for the information about that. I have coolant already mixed. My waterpump was replaced at 100.000km.
Did you drain coolant from expansion tank/radiator, or just splashed coolant out from lower rad hose and clean mess after..?
 
Since I already took temp sensor out, I drained most of coolant from there. Then removed rad hose from thermostat. Amount of drained coolant was about half liter to one liter.
 
My vanos job is now scheduled 15.3 8)

Okay, it might be good to replace that o-ring for bottom rad hose. Can you take measurement of it? I think it is 38x4.
I have some in stock in that size..

I compeleted my vanos replacement last week.

Here is some things i found out during my vanos seal replacement.

1. You have to remove bottom coolant hose from thermostat, approx 1 litre coolant will drain out.
2. You need 90 degree pliers, dont even think that you can do this job without those.
3. You will need stubby hex keys or really short 8mm hex bit
4. You will need small torque wrench (1/4" 5-30nm for example)
5. It is good to remove both belts, to avoid contamination with oil or coolant. Maybe you should consider that replace belts & tensioner pulleys if they are worn.
6. In my case vanos cannot be removed because of that support brace was contacting it. I used that method for more space what i did read before (loosen the support brace bolts and i manipulated it with piece of wood against water pump). Remove pulley, it is plastic.

I will say this work takes easily 5-7 hours, i did mine one week. Couple of hours/day.. Dont hurry, read instructions carefully.
