So it’s goodbye to the G29 (allegedly)

Do you think a Xdrive Z4 would help persuade more people to take the plunge? It took me some time to commit to the Z4 due to it being rear wheel drive and potentially out of action during winter. It's been far better in the wet than I expected (much more so than a rear wheel drive MX5 the wife owned some years ago) but as appalling as expected when there's any amount of snow on the ground.

For me, Xdrive would definitely push it further into the 'everyday car' category.

Mine was fine with winter tyres on. To be honest I don’t think xdrive would work in this form factor, too much compromise on normal performance just for an edge case situation. I think it’s more that people don’t see themselves enjoying such a car except for our 2-week summer we have in the UK.

If they really are retiring the Z4, along with Merc retiring the SLK etc, I may have to consider getting one of the last ones and keeping it for a while.

Being rear wheel drive is one of the major factor when I decided to go with Z4. If you look at the current 40i lineup, all models are xdrive except z4 m40i and 840i. I personally don't think the 40i output need the xdrive system to put the power down. Also, in the winter when it's cold, snow, or icey, I go for the winter tyre over the xdrive despite I agree that xdrive and winter tyre is the best when heavy snow or ice.

Overall, I think it's the 2-seat convertable configuration that put people off. Majority of people, who think car is just a transport method, want a SUV nowadays. Just look at how many people buy a 2 wheel drive SUV. What they want is the body shape. These are the people who usually don't even know there is winter tyre available and give the comment that my z4 can never be driven in winter as their SUV stuck in snow.

Not wishing to derail the topic but I used to love driving past the 4x4’s struggling in the snow on their 25 inch rubber bands, in my Z4 with proper snow tyres!

That’s our plan, get one as close to the production end and hold onto it. Main reason is to get as late as possible with no miles on so we can keep it longer.

I wonder if there is an element of who blinks first with the decision to can the 2-seaters. The market is not great for the Z4, SLK, TT etc, but if two of the 3 manufacturers decided to can their offerings then is there then a decent market left for the remaining manufacturer?

There may well be and it may also mean whoever holds out actually extends the lifespan of theirs as they’ve effectively cornered the market.

I have to say that having looked at the other two and a GTS 4.0 I’d be more inclined to get a 4 seater BMW than any of the others if the Z4 was to go first but who knows how long the petrol versions of the other BM’s will be around either.

Yes but is that because you're the physical size of a 3 bed semi Andrew...?

Would you have a Boxster if not..?

At least you said semi and not detached

In all honesty I’m not sure. Kathleen, as the least car oriented person ever, summed it up as far as I’m concerned. She said one of the things she didn’t like in the Boxster was the interior was very dated compared to the G29 and I can’t say I disagree with. To get the GTS to the spec level we wanted was then making it a £85k car and IMO, was it worth £35k more than the Z4, NO chance.

I’ve always been a manual driver and I’ve seen and listened to all the opinions of it’s not a proper drivers car etc with an auto but I can honestly say I preferred the G29 auto box to the GTS manual (for the short time I drove it)

So factoring all of that in personally would I pick one in current guise over an M40i, no, I don’t think I would. Salesman said a 911 would suit my needs better but it wouldn’t suit my wallet better so very unlikely that’s the route I’ll go down.

Having came from a 718 Boxster, the G29 is a far nicer cockpit.

Which is probably something I should’ve expanded on in my post above. For our use of the M40 it’s very important. Due to our location we’re normally away for a minimum of 3-4 days then you’ve got things like the Pyrenees trip on top of that so the larger, nicer and comfier cockpit is a huge bonus

Personally I take reviews with a pinch of salt at best, trying for yourself is the only way to go. Reading what you say the Zed is by far the better car for you, personal dimensions aside, and if you're not grinding your teeth for a boxy or 911 then no need to give it a second thought Andy. :driving:
