So, how is that no smoking law working (UK)?

Seems ok so far... is funny to watch them all standing outside pubs in the cold and rain... temperatures coming right down at the moment so they're not gonna be happy pretty soon.

It's great to be able to go for a night out and not smell of cigarettes the next morning.

It's great. Only problem is that I end up in the pub much more often now. It's easy to pop in for a couple now. Before, you'd come out stinking so only worth going in if you were going to make a night of it.

D.

First cases of smoking are being prosecuted. Especially lorry and van drivers are being picked up now as they are also in a place of work.

Greatest thing that happened in the UK this year

Impossible to get into the local airport, the entrance is always blocked by 40 chain smokers.

I guess the next step is to ban smoking within X number of meters from the buildings.

Last week I was at the doctor's office to get a flu shot and while waiting in the treatment room I was able to over hear the doctor with a patient in the treatment room next to me. (HIPPA Violation) The patient who I later saw was a man about 55 to 60 and the doctor was discussing the results of his recent stress test. The doctor was explaining that 30 plus years of smoking had taken it toll on his health and that he need to quit smoking if he wanted to live until retirement. He replied that he was going to try to cut back to one pack a day after the first of the year.... :o The doctor replied with, "Tom don't you understand what the hell I am trying to tell you here!

The conversation went on with all kinds of even dumber comments by the patient.... :(

The inflation on cigs has been unbelievable. When I started smoking in 1992 they cost £1.79 per pack - I quit in 2000, so glad now. Can't decide which gets more harm - your health or your wallet :D

loved it when they separated smoking in restaurants, probably about 10 years ago, and even more when they made smokers go outside at work....now they stand in the rain trying to stay dry.....AND still they smoke.

I remember being on the flightline in Nebraska. It could be -10 below freezing and the smokers would still huddle beside the truck smoking before we launched the aircraft. Honestly I think that was what has kept me from smoking. I vowed never to be such a slave to something that i'd go out in -10 below weather willingly.

Oh wait, that's what I did/do in the AF isn't it? Well that thought process just went out the window. Crapola.

I am a reformed smoker...Hi, I'm Greg and I haven't had a smoke since '92. I don't agree with governments meddling with the right to smoke or not and believe legislation banning smoking is rediculous, be that as it may. I hate the sin tax on booze and tobacco products as well. What is next, giving less health care to those that smoke or drink or that are morbidly obese? Anyway, off the soapbox now. I was just curious as to how this was working out. Thanks for the comments.

Healthcare limitation is already in place. People who are obese are refused operations until they lose the weight.

Regarding the government meddling - depends on where you stand I suppose, but those laws are needed to protect other people. Just as there are noise limiting laws. Self governing of people does not work as those that are addicted will never take the other views into consideration

I have never smoked and being in a smoke filled room will often send me into a coughing fit. That said I do agree with Greg on this point.

it's a difficult question really... I mean I like to go out to pubs... do the smokers have more right to smoke or do I have more right to clean air? Either way someone loses. You could say "if you dont like it dont go", but then you could say the same to the smokers. I suppose by taking the smokers choice away it is not affecting my health, but vice versa it does affect the health of the non smoker. I am on the side of the smoker I guess, but only just.

Well, I see both sides but couldn't agree with ducks more in that government is too damn meddling. A bar is...a bar - drinking, smoking, music..I think there could be a happy medium: why can't there be a separate room where smokers can go? Why do they have to go outside? Establishments sell more alcohol when smokers are allowed to indulge so I know they're not happy about the ban. Workplace is a different story I think, and more consideration should be taken.

In the time since the ban, I have been in small restaurants and bars I would not have even considered going before and they have never done such a good business as they do now.

Smokers are only one step up from drug addicts .... :fuelfire: :poke: :D
