Smoking under hood after winter storage.

I purchase a 2007 BMW Z4 last summer, I stored it for the winter and the previous owner told me she got the oil changed every April when she got out of storage. I just picked up the car and had to jump it do to a dead battery. Let it run for a bit and then drove home just a mile or two. When I got home I saw smoke coming out of the engine by the heat shield and spark plugs are. It drove fine but it’s a burning smell. Is this normal after getting it out of storage?
I’m not sure if I should drive to dealer to have it looked at. The car was fine when I stored it. It only have 25000.00 miles on it. And has been kept in mi t condition.

Welcome to the forum by the way!

It's just a guess, but it might be an oil leak from the cam-cover gasket - it's quite a common problem on 6 cylinder facelift models. Get the engine cover off and look for signs of oil leakage.

It will be the cam cover gasket failing and letting oil drip onto the exhaust where it burns and produces the smoke you are seeing. If its the original gasket then not surprised its given up, with a history of long lay ups the rubber degrades by going hard and that causes the leaks to appear. Take the cover off and reveal the centre plug well gaskets, I expect you will find they have gone hard and brittle, when they crack they allow oil to migrate into the plug wells and drown the plugs. Buy a replacement set that includes the 15 round rubber seals that are under the cover reataining bolts as these also go hard and will affect the torque settings of the retaining bolts and affect the pressure that is put on the gasket to maintain a good oiltight seal. Also use a good gasket sealant ONLY around the half moon shapes at the front and rear of the cam cover where the gasket changes direction and between the Vanos at the front. I use Blue Hylomar sealant with good results. The Brand I used was Payen and the round seals were from BMW Sophers using the forum discount, ordered by phone and posted to me.
