Smarttop for E89

Ok guys

Bad news, the seller is only offering 10% discount so it's not worth the trouble to do a group buy to save only like £25 each :P

I bought mine today, I can't wait to have the smarttop magic :)

I plan to use it at 20mph up/down twice a day. So far nobody has experienced roof/boot lid damage right?!?!

I've had SmartTop installed for years and apart from the car trying to eat me while I installed it, no issues. I never operate the roof on uneven ground, whether its the original design or the improved design. I mainly use it for emergency closing at traffic lights for example if the weather turns, plus its one touch features.

If you do try to operate the roof on an uneven surface, the system warns you & stops the roof mechanism

I meant while in motion. I wouldn't move the roof while driving on a road that was uneven or potholed or with manhole covers. I realise it will stop the roof (and possibly allow more damage) if the car is tilted or rocking around badly.

Also triggers if you take a corner with gusto even at 10mph, like swinging into a parking space for example.

Where did you order it from??

I won't mention the actual name but it's on eBay; search for "BMW e89 smarttop" and allow EU sellers. It is €384 inc postage to UK (approx £280 once you pay via paypal). There is a 14-day return policy which I mention because there was some confusion on whether he was sending the latest plug & play module or not.

I did a few tests with a board poster (friend driving the beemer while I held it up like a nutcase) to get a feel for the draft. It wasn't that much at 20mph but it was a lot at 25 and 30mph. I think I'll set it at 30km/h which is about 18.5mph. On the online instructions it mentioned that once you start the roof it continues running even if you exceed the speed limit, I think the advantage is that you can start driving faster towards the final 10 seconds of the cycle.

The one touch is good and operation of the roof is not interrupted by opening the doors!
Top notch bit of kit.

What happens if you want to stop the roof mid point.
Lets say you open roof remote and notice something that's getting in the way in the boot.
Can the roof be stopped.

I get fed up of holding the open and close button.
Not bothered about on the move, just want one touch.
I notice on opening the green led comes on and off. Just wondering if a circuit could be made to latch the switch to open and close using the leds.
Would need a way of stopping mid way, just in case.
Perhaps the switch could be made to latch and off.

To stop it at any point with smarttop fitted, you just press the button again & it stops.

To resume (or go back in the opposite direction) from this stopped position, click the button you want (open or close) & it does it.

Pretty foolproof.

Matt

I wouldn't be without mine. Yes it's expensive but the costs are outweighed by the convenience the unit provides

I've had the smarttop on my slk 200 and z4, one of the best mods.

one touch for roof, remote roof control, remote window control, automatic folding of mirrors when locking the car.

I love it

i want one too

anyone selling?

or fleabay it is?

It has to be from a trusted source - it's not worth the wait as they don't come to the market that often.
My advice, just get on and buy one - you'll not regret it!

I believe this is the one you need for an e89 - http://www.ppcgb.com/products/smarttop-smarttop-roof-module-99922022261

It's where ive bought both my smart tops.

hey everyone,

I'm shopping for a used Z4 right now so threads like this are really interesting for me.

Quick question: is the "open roof with remote fob" an optional feature? Or is it standard? I saw on the CarBuyer youtube review he starts the episode by opening the car with the remote.

Is it the comfort pack?

Thanks! :D

Not in the comfort pack on a 2011 E89 but might be an option. Smarttop enables it though.

My ST arrived yesterday from mods4cars (next day delivery - good stuff) and I need to ask a question of all the existing users.

I've done the recommended USB update procedure but want to programme the options using a laptop or PC before installing it in the car to save all the fiddling with the indicators - but can't find how to do this. I'm sure I've seen somewhere that it's possible - or have I misread the blurb?

Anyone help?
