SmartTop finally ordered... Now Installed.. Dangerously!

So I believe this may have been my error...

I went back to the car, my faith in the product dashed and the reality of the reason BMW have safeties in place, and started to remove the trim again in order to remove SmartTop.

While reaching inside the car, it locked and unlocked. Thinking major malfunction I quickly leapt out of the way, only to realise my keys were in my pocket. I'd pressed the buttons on the key accidentally. So my going theory now is that the keys were likely in my pocket while installing and I'd accidentally pressed the key to close the car while still working inside the boot. The fact this closed with the tray in the unlocked position is still something I need to talk to MODS4CARS about however I believe had I placed my keys somewhere safe while working, this never would have happened.

So, I'm keeping the unit as the features are great, but it has taught me to be safety aware when working/operating the roof.

As for power of the mechanism... its strong, so strong in fact that I could not resist it and got out of the way just in time.

No more dangerous chores today... I like my limbs just the way they are!

must say I have taken my smart top in and out a couple of times and have never had that happen!
was your key fob in your pocket as I have found a couple of times that I have unlocked the car unknowingly by just leaning against
something when I do anything to the smart top I make sure the fob is where I can see it but never in my pocket just in case I
inadvertently operate it.
That aside I would still recommend the smart top for the extra features it gives you

So.. the usual pics.. as I say it was very straight forward and thanks to others pointing out the lock mechanisms on the connectors I had no electrical issues. Also as I don't have PDC, everything popped in the PDC unit space very nicely. I'll need a whiskey later tho!

Trim tools make this a WHOLE lot simpler.

So boot bracket cover comes off first...

Then part of the soft trim...

Then part of the solid trim...

All trim removed...

Then there's a cover over the styrene capsule that holds the control units... that off reveals the wiring as OEM...

Cables going in...

The completed install with cabling and unit sat in the PDC space. This means all the trim fits back together neatly as fitting it elsewhere was a pain and left things protruding.

...and when completed, I popped in Taz's sticker!

Funny you should say this. When I fitted mine I was worried about the safety of it and cut a piece of 3x2 as a safety prop. Didn't mention it because I thought you all might think I was a pussy or health and safety geek. It wasn't needed as nothing happened but I'm glad I did now.

You read correctly. I'm guessing the car only checks the tray when opening as it assumes its down when closing as the roof would be on it!?

I've emailed mods4cars to get their feedback

Just been for a run out in the sun and the top down and up one touch at speed works brilliantly and makes usage so much easier. No holding buttons and no stopping or worrying it will stop half open or closed when pulling away at lights etc..

I always thought it was an overall interlock - but now youve said that it seems so obvious now that it is only a one way interlock. ie to prevent roof openining and stowage if the boot space was otherwise occupied !

I think it must have been an accidental prod of the "close" button as you've suggested.

Your experience hasn't put me off - I'll invest after the security update. (probably March)

just a reminder i've got a smart top unit for sale, car going soon.

never had any dramas with mine but then I don't keep my keys in my pocket

glad you got it sorted Maniac

Been out today in ours and had the roof down and up a few times.

That holding the button to lower the roof is a real pain in the backside and is the convenience I would like from this unit, but like Tim, just not sure about it yet.

Does the car still check the tray is in place before opening the roof with the unit installed?

Yes it won't open without the tray in place. I don't think the module overrides the tray I think there's just no check that the tray is down before closing the roof as it should never be up.

good to see it all went well
i think i will get one soon

after i get my new 20" rims sorted lol

Can I get some advice from anyone on here please....ok done the install.

Pleased to say the green LED was flashing and yes the roof still works.....but I can't get the functions to work which I have added the module for....

Is there something I am missing or do I have to programme it via the USB on my computer...

Any help would be appreciated...

Nick
