SmartTop finally ordered... Now Installed.. Dangerously!

How is it that Maniac starts a valid thread about a roof module and it ends up with a 'P' take about a mans choice of wheels ?

Look back at the thread Tim!

Once a members personal choice of kit called daft or comical it can create friction.

The main point is that a thread was started to discuss a particular topic and goes way way off track.

I dont think Tim was piss taking at all.
He has an opinion and as long as it's not offensive he can say what he thinks.
If you want to see piss taking read the thread where Tim's Z3 was called Noddy's car
....and regards threads going off topic - never seen that before eh?

Sorry if it came across that way, I actually like the alloys that have been posted on, but what I was trying to say was I don't get why you would want to fit excessively large alloys that rub? what is the point? Its like I don't get when people fit stretched tyres to get a look (Euro look) which to me just looks daft and is probably dangerous. I guess its like youngsters wearing their jeans around bottom of their arses :? Its just a fad!!

Tim.

Well I don't think it was Andys intention to buy large wheels that rub. He bought them because he liked the look but found out they rub. An expensive error.

I have enough trouble with 19" so lord knows how I'd get on with 20" wheels...

Ooh... email is thru... its on its way... yay... should get here for a weekend installation. Also adding another little mod while we're on, but not saying what it is, its contentious and I can't be arsed with all the 'you must be mad' comments :)

Every one is entitled to there opinion ,,,personally I think 18" rims look daft on the z4 and do nothing for it

Ps Porsche put 20" rims on the bosxter ,,,,but what would they know

Indeed they do put 20" wheels on, however their cars were designed and styled to take that size of wheel, the zed wasn't. As for dissing your wheels, nope, not guilty, it's your car and you can do what you like with it, all I'm doing is given reasoned advise against it.

sorry Maniac for straying off topic again :D

Nah, stubby I've had for a while... SmartTop's going in on Saturday (weathers ok by the look of it).. already have the contentious mod in, tried it last night, works a dream. More for the other half than me.

Well the SmartTop is installed. Pretty simple really. Took about 40 minutes. A lot of that time is spent trying to get all the cables to sit somewhere. I didn't have the issue others had with regard to the flashing light 'roof motor failure' so that was good. But while I'd like to say it went off without a hitch... it didn't and I could quite easily have been injured as while putting the trim back into the car with the roof half open the boot part of the roof started to close, trapping my coat in the mechanism and leaving me only seconds to get out of the way before the mechanism crushed my arms. Now I've no idea why it did this, perhaps because I'd had the key out of the car at this point and it was shutting down or whatever but it also closed with the tray in the unlocked position meaning I couldn't raise the roof again to untrap myself. So with a struggle, I managed to get out of my coat, and open the boot, where I was able to put the tray down and then open the roof again to untrap the coat. Fortunately no damage was done, but this could have been a major problem and one I intend to speak to mods4cars about.

Anyhoo drama over, the kit does work as advertised however I'm a little shaken up and I'm considering taking it out and sending it back as my confidence in it has been knocked significantly...

I was kinda wandering how you were getting on as you mentioned you were getting it today. Well that is bloody scary and glad your OK and I can imagine a heart stopping moment. I'm unsure how much strength there is in the hydraulics etc but could have caused a very nasty injury.

I've been watching the the smart top video as seriously tempted as I have folding mirrors etc and do like the one touch open and closing but I still have niggling doubts it will screw the roof up. I'm still sitting on the fence with this one.

I would definitely speak to the supplier about this.

Tim.

Glad u got yourself free,maniac...could have been very sore indeed.
Pity,as this sounds a good product, looked at it myself for mine, but may think twice.will watch with interest as to how u get on with it/if u keep it in or not?
