Sky TV....dead format?

So, for the first time in 15 years or so, I've decided not to renew my contract with Sky. Over this last year I've found myself watching it less and less, I tend to watch my shows on Netflix or Kodi (which I know isn't strictly fair play)....either way I'm thinking that the format of paying £70+ a month for Sky seems to have less appeal now then ever before. Are others of a similar view?

I'll be moving in a few months and I'm considering whether I even need a TV license. I can't remember the last time I watched live!

We are with Virgin and ditched it a few years ago because of the extortionate £100+ cost per month. Obtaining a source elsewhere for that price a year basically. However have since gone back. It is very expensive and we probably only use about 20% of it. However there are 5 of us and we do watch a bit of TV, it would be hard for my mum who is now retired to go without the asian channels for example.

I used to have Sky, but felt it was not worth the money. You pay all that and they still show adverts, cheeky blinders.

We moved from Virgin to Sky a few years back and wouldn't use another provider

3x HD/3D sky boxes, Movie Channels and F1 Channel for £90 per month

We actually have a 4th Skybox (an extra £10 per month) and installed it at my mothers house, in short she gets the same as we do for £10 per month

We have basic tv and unlimited broadband for £30 per month through virgin.

All four Bedrooms have amazon fire stick with full sky including sports and movies for approx £25 one off cost each and nothing per month. The kitchen and living room have openboxes connected to a sky dish with full sky including sports movies and pay per view for £60 per year for the two.

I used to pay sky's extortionate amounts but really disagree with what they pay for the football rights. It's reported Messi has been offered £800,000 per week to play football for Man City.

I currently pay for the full sport / movie packages from Sky and tried to save by buying one of these boxes which gives all the channels for a one off cost. The picture quality wasn't quite as good but the clincher was the ease of use of the sky box with the TV Guide etc so only lasted a week! I also love the "live" pause forward and back feature.

How does the amazon fire stick work? Any noticeable operating differences between it and normal Sky tv? How can you get Sky open boxes for £60 per year which I am very interested in as I pay more than this a month?

If I can save this then more cash for my playing with cars fund :D

That's one of the reasons I get basic Virgin tv, the wife likes to record series and all the soaps. The openbox is like a free view box and nothing like as user-friendly or reliable as proper sky tv. I just use it for the premium channels, all of which are only available in SD apart from BT sports which comes in HD. Wouldn't recommend as main way to watch to but is good as an alternative to the expensive options via sky. If your interested I can talk you through what to buy/do.

The Amazon fire stick is a bit like plugging your phone into the tv. The stick plugs into a USB port on the tv and you can add apps to it, similar to a phone. You can then open the apps on screen via the remote. Certain apps give the to channels but you can also get all the most recent films as they're released on dVd. Again, not as user friendly as sky or virgin but for a one off cost for bedroom/kitchen use are brilliant.

These devices with content are widely available pre-loaded on eBay/Amazon. I'm by no-means an expert but if anyone wants any info just PM me.

Thanks Dan. I think it would boil down to being the same choice I had when I had the one off cost box which I didn't favour due to SD and the operating platform.

Thanks though. I think it's something we all should look at periodically as tech changes quickly and I am sure a viable more cost effective "Sky" will come out at some time.

Also just reduced the sky package - still our best bet for unlimited broadband and free mobile/landline calls in this region, but I'm never home and the wife doesn't watch much premium TV so just reduced to the basic package.

Thinking about an open box for Christmas though so we're not stuck with the crappy repeats!

I called Sky to drop the movies as I don't use them, they straight away chopped the price in half ...
