Call me old-fashioned but I prefer to visibly look at the markings on the dipstick rather than rely on the dashboard telling me to top-up my oil. Of course, that's no good for you dipstick-less facelift owners.
Personally haven't found my 3.0i doesn't use much oil, but have the strange occurence that if I leave it parked on a side-slope, i.e. one side of the car lower than the other, the oil warning light comes on when I restart the engine. That's despite the dipstick level being perfect. That's why I don't really rely on the electronics...
