Should I go Matt Black Z4? (Tons of other flat black rides)

Dear all, before this topic gets remarks "omg that is so rice", I've noticed that this is fab on going for a bit in the States as well. I've 3 of my of friends who done up their cars to matt black recently, a R35 GTR, 645i & a MY06 STi all around the same time. And it's all by using stickers except the STi which is paint, hence literally cutting the polishing/paintwork maintance to zero. We are refering to good quality stickers from 3M & Oracle and very very resistant to the elements, had it done on my rex bonnet before.

Bottomline is I'm able to get a sponser in a way as a trial Z4 to have done up in fully Matt BLACK or WHITE over my sterling grey and I'm kinda on the fence about this...

My friend's STi

Excellent question sandman, I was about to ask the exact same question as I am seriously thinking of giving the car a different paint work. The choice being either Matt Black as you have illustrated above, or Pearl White, or going wild I may be considering an Aluminium Plated finish... I saw one in the Merc Museum at Stuttgart and also there is an Al plated A8 at Dubai and could look very good if the finishing is good....

I never know the Matt Black seen on the cars are done using 3M / Oracle stickers?!

I would be interested to find out where and how much will it cost to having the car done up in the above finishes mentioned + any maintenance / long term issues that may arise regarding this?

Thanks for raising the issue again Sandman.

I actually like it on most of the cars there, especially the Nissan. The Ferrari 430 looked rubbish though.

Would this do any damage to the paint beneath when it comes to taking it off? What about stone chips and things like that? Will they cause problems?

Only a couple of those are stickers, the GTR being one of them, rest i assume would be paint. And yea no damage, hence the beauty of it, you can reverse it unlike paint if it's a "sticker" job. I like the GT2 tho.

You didn't need that many pictures to convince me. I'm SOLD! :D

The scooby looks great. Someone mockup a Z4 on P-Shop

If the stickers leave no lasting damage, well OK then, but paint? You are going to limit your resale value. Any paint job will do that…”Must have been in a crash!!!” Really how many perspective car buyers would be attracted to flat black? Some, but more that would not be. If you are going to keep the Zed forever, have at it. :)

I will never go the paint route :) It's stickers that I'm still considering, not sure if I'll ever even get down to doing it as well haha, getting a feeler first.

JMO, but they look like schit!
Just another fad.

I have a friend with a '07 AW M5 that I had to put in a straight jacket (well you get the idea) to keep him from painting it FB.
After seeing one done, he is now very happy that he didn't do it.

One of the focal points to the exterior of the Z4 are the lines and is the flame surface paint. Personally, I would paint any other car flat black but not a Z4. Then again, I dare ya.

Only super/exotic cars can get away with having a flat-black paint job and still look cool. People know it's there for a purpose.

On a car like the Z4, or any average joe's car for the matter, it just looks like there's primer on the car and the owner cannot financially afford a new paint job.

But then again if it's just stickers in your case and it's free, sure go for it. Worst thing that can happen is you don't like it and peel away the stickers.

+1

Hey, matey, got a couple cans of Flat Black (Aviation Grade) that can hook you right up, just follow with a steady mist of Matte finish, and you are ready to go

Wouldn't do it myself, looks like crap, unless you are Batman :D

Excluding the scoobies & that F430, the mat black looks awesome, especially on the Nissan GTR, it would certainy look different so go for it. I read somewhere that the new Mercedes Black (it could be the brabus one i cant remember to be honest ?. it was in last months topgear magazine) stated that it was a vinyl covering the car, not paint. If its good enough for them to use why not ?
