Should I fill my hoop?

Always good to get people clicking with a dodgy title :D

Anyway, I have managed to pick up everything I need to install a wind deflector in my 20i, except for the mesh inserts that go in the hoops.
Certainly not paying the £199 someone wanted for a pair on Ebay and not too enthralled with the idea, mooted elsewhere, of cobbling my own together.
Wanting to get on with fitting the deflector (drilling my existing covers) but don't want to be messing about dismantling it all twice.
So either I sit and wait, potentially for months, until a pair of the inserts turn up, or I make do without them.
I must say, from an aesthetic point of view, they do very little for me, but does anyone have any experience to tell me whether I'd be missing much by not having them fitted?

I have no experience as I have the full monty..

Looking at it from a fluid dynamics perspective I can’t really see you’re going to miss a lot..

Given the turbulence from multiple other areas I think you’ll be hard pushed to notice it....well at speeds less than 120mph..

Aesthetically the infills don’t do much for me personally ..

I would put the money towards a 35i upgrade

I would use what you have and wait to find the rest? But I'm the impatient type.
Using a Lexan screen. It covers the whole shootin' match.

Yeah, my aerodynamics theory was telling me it wouldn't make a huge difference.
But you can forget the 3.5i. I'm putting anything extra towards a remap. Currently talking to Clive Athowe Tuning in Norwich who have a good rep and a rolling road to sort it properly.

There’s always the nuclear option of hairnets, save a bundle of cash to put towards your turbo nutter remap upgrade as well :hairdryer:

Rob! Hairnets? Really. Let's just say I haven't wasted hormones growing hair for a few years.

Last year I managed to source the brackets and centre deflector cheap of eBay but I have beensearching since for sensibly priced hoop inserts and so far I have failed. There were some from a German ebay seller who wanted 50 to 60 GBP each I offered him 30 each but he wouldn't budge he sat on those for over a year and only just now managed to sell them. Recently I saw the ones on eBay asking what is basically Bmw main dealer price but in the last few days he has removed them from sale.

Anyway getting back to the point, those centre hoops are a rare find even if you are willing to pay stupid money for them so I would say fit what you have now and do the hoops if and when you get them. Having done the same I really don't think those centre hoops will make much of a difference in terms of function but to me they complete the look. So I am still going to keep an eye out for some which are sensibly priced, no doubt now I will be bidding against you!  :poke:

Two final points IMHO..if you’re going to mod the plastic hoop covers, paint them gloss black, they will look good against the VO paintwork..

Get a pair of clamp on ponytails for you and the co-pilot to poke through the gap..turn an issue into a feature..a bit Status Quo like

[ref]Silverstar[/ref], I appreciate your input, thank you very much, more or less the way I was leaning anyway.
[ref]Pbondar[/ref], I think for now I will keep the silver covers as I quite like them.

As for all the other suggestions.........................John, Rob, et al. I'll get back to you.
