Should I buy my old car back?

Long time newbie member here that went afk for a few years

I sold my 2003 e85 3.0i 6 months ago during lockdown for a bargain price of £2500 as I needed the money quick.

I have regretted that decision ever since and found myself looking for another recently now I have some cash built back up.

I had a thought that I still have the old mans number that I sold my car to and decided to message him asking if he’d consider selling it.

So he hasn’t driven it much apparently and it’s been sat in his garage since.

He says to make him an offer after telling me he replaced the key because he lost it and changed the wheels and tyres and fixed a window regulator.

Now I offered him 3k and he came back with 3.3k and will do the mot as it’s due.

I know I’m at a disadvantage here because he knows I want my car back so is being greedy with the price.

What’s the forums advice? Shall I give him what he wants for it and take the knock or buy another car?

I can’t find a decent 3.0i under £3800 elsewhere.

They seem to be appreciating which is bizarre during winter as I remember 6 months ago they were going for allot less.

I’ve attached all the pictures of the car when I sold it.

If you can afford the £800, can resolve it in your mind and love the car, I’d say it’s only money and life is too short, so buy it back.

Better the car you know, thats whats important here, looks like you will have to pay his price if you really want it back.

Same as above, you could buy an alternative one for £3k, then its only £300 in reality - I would buy it back as you know the car and how well its been looked after.

Only you know how secure things are financially now - 6 months on from selling (could you not afford to SORN it at the time?) your now contemplating spending an extra £800...that said there is value in this as he he has fixed problems/ changed wheels /new key and any work for a new MOT. Good luck whatever decision you make

If he’s put wheels on it ,sorted the window and will do an Mot,I don’t think he’s being to greedy. You know the car,no brainier,go for it.

I have to agree with the above, you let it go cheep so accept that, put your hand in your pocket and pay the man what he wants :D at the end of the day it’s still cheaper than whats out there and you know the car

Definitely buy it back.
New wheels and tyres, a fixed window regulator and an upgraded key. I think he’s being completely fair with that price especially as you know it’s a good car and so does he!
Yeah, go for it. 😁

As everyone else has said better the devil you know and if you can afford it why not

If you go and buy another, you have already discovered that you could end up paying £3800. Plus of course you would be buying the "unknown" , I assume you knew any niggles/issues with the old car? Ignore the bollox about the loss of a key as that has nothing to do with the car and is his stupidity and wheels are personal preference only. Does he still have the old wheels if so pay the money with both sets of wheels and fit winter tyres to one set. Ask yourself, would I pay that money if I was looking at that car on someones drive? If so, take it. ( and the hit that hurts a bit )

Do you like the new wheels/tyres he’s put on and does he still have/is including the originals in the deal?

If so, there’s some value there one way or another, fixing the small issues and MOTing it doesn’t seem like an extortionate ask but only you know what you’re happy to pay for it.

If you can't find anything comparable below £3,800 and he's willing to take £3,300 for your old car I think the answer is pretty obvious!

What you sold it for is irrelevant really.

There seem to have been a few people on here recently looking for 3.0 litre cars; I’m not surprised prices are firm. £3,300 doesn’t seem unreasonable regardless of what you sold the car for. It sounds as though the current owner has invested at least £800 in it. Sounds like a bargain to me.

I wouldn’t go back personally. Things are never as good as you remember

I completely agree!!

Better the devil you know... or another 17 year old car you don’t

IMO £800’s a small price to pay considering what you say he’s spent

The fella has put some money into the car, money that you would have spent. You will both have broken even - if you are sure that it hasn’t been ragged about - just pay up and enjoy the car again.

Thanks for all the replies guys the current owner has since put it through the MOT and it passed so I asked for pictures of the wheels and well they’re awful!

Let’s hope he’s still got the originals, they just need a refurb.
