Shell V-Power experiment data/ 3.0si MPG

Filled up with the higher octane fuel and am keeping an eye on fuel consumption but it's difficult to assess as I've found driving style effects mpg far more than any other car I've had. I do think that the sports button helps but as soon as those six cylinders are used to effect the mpg plummets - so difficult to avoid as well - why have the 3.0 litre and not utilise that power?

Still wonder if the sound generator mod effects mpg - any one have any thoughts?

I've started driving with average speed rather than mpg on the screen so that I can just enjoy the Zed. . .

Really interested figures and information. Great post. I wonder what the results would be in comparison of short journeys as thats what I use mine for mainly.

Having said that, I just covered 225 miles (virtually all motorway at 70mph) averaging 36.2mpg after a 30l fill up (77 miles still on the tank)

I had around 30 miles left before I filled up so I think 269 miles for 30 litres (40.5mpg) isnt a bad return on standard shell

who knows?? sorry i don't know enough about the variants i just know that if i drive sensibly @70-80 on a motorway im usually getting good mpg. on a more combined cycle so a bit of town 30/40 cruising at 60/70 on dual carriagways etc this will drop to low 30's.

i used to drive from runcorn to the center of Liverpool. it was about 25 miles each way/ 1/2 would be 60/70 roads 1/4 40mph dual carriage ways and 1/4 stop start city. obviously lots of lights and waiting. the z4 would be better on fuel than my 1.8 focus.

i would say it depends on how heavy your right foot is and your driving style. im not slow but i dont see the point in ragging it when its busy either.

How the crap do you guys get mid 30s MPG? You must have the self-control of a monk.

I do 500 miles a week and my average is 27.4 mpg.

Im going to have to start using Vpower and coasting down hills...

My dad always taught me to do that to save fuel.

AB7 great post but how do you get 35mpg from a 3.0 - you must drive like a Saint or have long stretches at 56mph. If you try really hard you can get sub 30 mpg, please try harder in future :driving:

So after reading this thread I decided to take the plunge and fill up with V power. I was a little hesitant as it was the same price as Diesel ( a good 7-8Ppl more than standard Shell fuel).

Initial thoughts are that the car does seem to idle smoother and revs smoothly, however this could be a placebo because I am "wanting" a difference.

However one area that is better is fuel economy, I drive economically anyway and normally average 37-38MPG of late (I dont bother with fuelly any more as I got bored of entering the information). With normal fuel and normal commute/ driving I get the red light at 340 miles with the potential to push to 400 miles before empty.

With V power I have got to 395 miles before the red light came on, computer still showing 70 miles left on the range, however the range is so unstable when below 1/4 of a tank that it is hard to judge. Considering this has included quite a few short B road trips plus a number of commutes through Derby at rush hour I am impressed. A trip to Milton Keynes and back helped yesterday, however the trip south was awful with the M1 grinidng to a halt very often.

I suspect I could easily break the 500 mile mark if I had not had the multple short trips and traffic jams to contend with.

Just came across this post now..

I did a similar thing a while back when I had my 3.0. I actually logged the numbers for my E46 330, Mini Cooper S Works and Z4 3.0 Roadster over about a year. Vpower was always on top...

I came up with the exact same conclusions and, from memory, funnily enough my 3.0 was averaging .17/mile.

That said I had a hard time convincing people at work at the time and most were making fun of me! Glad more people are getting the same results.

I recently averaged 45mpg on a 40 mile journey from Chelmsford to frinton using tesco momentum, I enjoy the challenge of increasing mpg & planning ahead more with my driving style :driving:
Going to use shell fuel soon to see if it improves things.

So, i have been using V-Power for the last month or so.... And i can confidently say that my mpg has gone up by at least 3-4 mpg, doing the similar trips in a similar driving style. V-POWER wins!

It realy is the best fuel and makes the engine run so much smoother. BP ultimate makes my 3.0 si run like a dog.

Over the last month I've definitely done more miles on tanks of Sainsbury's Super and V Power than regular fuel. Due to being in Pontypool at weekend, the Tesco, which advertised Momentum, only had 95 RON so am on pikey tesco fuel currently. No obvious loss in power or change in running but I'll be glad to get some higher RON back into the tank.

I live in Cheltenham but spent a few month working in Sheffield (now MK, closer but not that much quicker/ easier). I just found that when I drove up tired late on a Sunday I quite happily sat at 70ish, and on the way back on a Friday afternoon - well you're having a good run if you can get above 70 anyway. Not to mention there are plenty of average 50 sections on the M5 and M1.

I do tend to drive more economically than most, but that's more my driving style rather than consciously trying. Rest assured I enjoy my car on the weekends (included in that data), but the long economical drives in the week tend to cancel it out.

On motorway trips I am getting 38 mpg at 70mph, around 32 mpg with mixed town and motorway/dual carriageway and around 25 mpg for local trips. That includes the odd bit of hooning too but I would say driving style is the main factor. You can still have plenty of fun but being smooth and anticipating are key. Not knowing the specifics of the engines I wouldn't coast in neutral but the highest gear possible for the speed to avoid the possibility of a richer idle mix. Carrying momentum through and avoiding coming to a complete stop are what I think make the biggest savings.

Coasting in neutral is not as fuel efficient as coasting in gear due to the ecu fuel shut off occurring in gear. You burn fuel in neutral and burn no fuel coasting in gear.
