As said before in my case with the high rev use it needs checking yearly, so this has been a real valuvale lesson, in A) not relying on everything your getting from your garage / tuner / dealer ( I'm talking simpsons here BTW) Make sure your getting shim reports and understand what your seeing on your shim reports. B) Do your own fact finding and work if your confident enough to. I now have the knowledge to shim check and i couldnt believe how easy it is, the hysteria behind these is nothing but that..... Hype. Anyone on here could do this...

however it took me too long to do this but again was being overly careful and still managed to loose a nut down on the under tray!!

Big "WELL DONE" from me! I'm really glad you got to properly understand the way that these parts all fit together so had the balls to have a go at sorting out the job yourself and achieve the result you wanted. 8)

It didn't matter how much time it took you to do the job and get it right because you were learning and gaining confidence all the time and you've now got the experience that you otherwise couldn't buy.

considering the stated fix was to remove the cam which would have meant stripping down the vanos and probably a near 1k bill...... I'm feeling rather pleased... more to the point, doing that would have been a travesty, i have never done this before and was able to have the shim removed within 3 mins and then proceed as normal.....

After seeing the difference between the shim int he car, 2.2 to the shim i put in 2.04 their was no WAY the valve was ever being held open either.... the difference was like 4 sheets of paper... again as indicated by the car running as normal, however it still needing doing ad I'm GLAD i checked compression just in case... before and after exactly the same and uniform across the cylinders.

So you didn't need to freeze the cylinders, remove camshaft, strip out vanos and your valve collets didn't explode and your valve drop into the cylinder..???

Great result! I'm intrigued though... What makes you suspect simpsons never did the check? I've had 2 inspection services with them and took a friend of mine's car there for one also and 100% certain they did the clearances for all of them. I personally don't think it's their style to not do the work.

they told me no shims , so I'm sure they checked, but i don't think they checked everything as they should have done, maybe skipped some even?? something about that particular visit doesn't add up for me .... I'm not going to go backwards tbh but..... I'm pretty certain they were never checked properly. if at all.... They did ALOT of work for me on that particular visit, but for further reference it was also noted they didn't change the gearbox oil and diff oil as per the inspection 2 id paid for.... so go figure, i respect simpson and I'm greatful to redish but if I've learned anything.... don't take things for face value dig, do your homework and go informed, However i still think they are redish are amongst the best indies out their. Im just pleased i gained some very worth-while knowledge and my pride and joy is all good

Anyway, glad you've got to the bottom of it by yourself. As you say these things aren't rocket science and it's just having the time, some confidence that you're not a complete monkey and the tools.

i think it was julian but as the cars been with them so many times i can't be sure tbh.... tbh I'm not going to go any further into it but I'm also very surprised at some of the revelations of recent times, my best advice to Everyone, where-ever you take your car , just be super anal and do not feel a tit for being that way. iv learned some very valuable lessons from this, luckily all is well, thanks for sentiments...

Shame you bought a shim kit though as just buying the one you needed would have saved you a bit and you will probably never use most of the other shims.

Your car probably will sell for less if you service it yourself but look at the money you will be saving on garage bills!
Also gives you a good chance of bonding with your car, the impact on resale value wil diminish as the car ages imho.

it took me longer as i bagged and tagged everything, plus the level of care and detail i went to was above and beyond what anyone else would take.... it took me 3 mins to remove the shim in question... never done this before in my life.... i think I'm not going to comment on my thoughts but i will say i thank redish for looking after my car as they did and flagging this issue up. some of my previous comments i even more stand by after today.

i will always get mine done at the likes of redish / simpson for the stamp on time but will be doing my own checks yearly for my own piece of mind. My high rev use of the car needs this level of checks imo, i can't wait to get back in the car and just drive!! will be doing so ASAP!!
