Service overdue?

I have the same sort of problem myself where as the service book has been lost and The dealer who supplied the car has only done minor warranty work, the BMW main agent selling the car has done a full service and it has gone through the BMW check list to qualify for the years warranty I spoke with them today and they have got a replacement service book and handbook but all that will show that it had a service done with them at 24k but the way I understand it is if they sell a car under BMW approved car scheme they cannot then renege at a later date through lack of" full service history" It does seem unlikely that the car could have gone this long (4 years) without some sort of service. But I am a bit concerned now.

Mines going in for a service next week for and inspection 1+ brake fluid change. Had a quick look at the service booklet and it's had running in service and then an oil service at 21,000 miles (one year later). Seems a little over due mileage wise but i've had no issues with warranty work, had a new gear box+roof seals which cost £3/4k. Cars now approaching 39,000 miles and its asking for an inspection 1 in 500 miles. I always thought it was every two years or 15,000 miles

Same thing happened to me today when i was GOING to buy a z4 registered feb 2008.

7k on the clock. Display indicating 6000miles til oil service. Nothing stamped in the book since pre inspection stuff, nothing also on the computer to indicate that its had a service.

I spoke to the guy in charge of servicing who informed me that oil anf brake fluid should have been changed 2 yearly irrespective of milage.

Waiting for the dealer to get back to me now.

2 options.
- Walk away.
- Get then to do the service that should have been done in feb.

If you go to a dealer armed with your chassis number they can give a full history of al visits to a BMW dealer .. and original spec sheet

Should have mentioned, the car is through a BMW dealership. Approved BMW!

Wherever you buy you Zed from DO A THOROUGH CHECK before you hand over your dosh or sign on the dotted..... IT WILL save heartache later. I keep repeating this and then see people who subsequently have issues that were apparent prior to purchase. If you do find issues but still want the vehicle then at least they present a good bargaining point to reduce the purchase price or have work done before handover.

Totally agree but you would have thought buying BMW "Approved" you would get a car that had FSH as described on the BMW website.

If i hadn't had looked through the maintainance book i would have possibly had a car that had not been serviced in 4 years as i do low milage.

Update on this I spoke direct with BMW warranty and there answer was that if the car did not have full and correct service history the selling BMW dealer could not sell it as an approved vehicle and if I went ahead with the purchase and needed to make a claim in the future BMW warranty would be invalid I would also not be able to take up extended warranty at a later date. when I brought this to the attention of the sales manger he said I was wrong but he would check with the warranty Dept, called me back later to confirmed that I was correct. Needless to say I pulled out of the deal which was a shame because it was the spec I had been looking for.

TBH i'm raging mad about it now. Dealer didn't get back to me and it seems to me that the car cannot be sold as approved used as it has no FSH.

Pity cos the car was speced to my liking and in perfect ( except 108s) condition.

Phone call to the boss tomorrow and an e-mail to BMW. I, at least want compensation for my milage.

What's likely to be interesting on it?

You keep stating that it's not got a stamped book. Not having stamps in the service book IS NOT the same as having no service history.

Mine had a full service history - checked out with BMW Customer Services on their £1/minute line (as a lot of dealerships can't/won't do it for you for free anymore) - but it only had the 1,200 mile service stamped in the book. When I thought I was going to sell it in January, I physically drove 200 miles around the dealerships (18th December in all that snow) to get missing stamps and copies of invoices for warranty work.

There is nothing on the BMW "system" to show it's been serviced, as i did post.

What should i do, drive the Cornwall to visit the dealership where the previous owner lived? It's a long way from Darlington.

TBH i should not have to P**s about like this to try and make sure an "APPROVED USED BMW" is what it should be- An APPROVED BMW!!

Sorry, my error. Is this the dealer system where you're buying it from or the BMW customer service phoneline? The two do not necessarily hold identical records.

No, but have you called the original supplying dealer?

No you shouldn't, but just because it's from a dealer does not mitigate your responsibility to check out the car you're purchasing.
All it gives you is a bit more confidence that it'll be sorted out to your satisfaction if you do buy the car.
'BMW Approved' is purely a marketing name for their used car scheme - it's meant to infer guaranteed quality & technical checks, whilst legally having bugger all comeback.

BTW, I'm not defending BMW dealers, and my views on them are well publicised on various internet forums already

I'd see what answer you get, as it's very easy to retrospectively add a 'missing' service to the computer as long as they've got an invoice number to go with it.
It's also very easy for you to walk away - unless you've left a deposit or traded in another car.

In the meantime, try to find another, and if you do simply walk away. Even if you've paid a deposit it should be refunded as the car is materially different to what you agreed to.

If you can't find another, then you'll need assurances (in writing) from both BMW and BMW Warranty that the new/used car warranty is still valid, with a bit of cash/extras/servicing to continue with the deal.

Spoke to BMW warranty this morning. They may reject a claim if it can be linked to a missed or overdue service...........Nice
