Service Interval Question HELP

Hi People, need your help please...

I picked up my 06 Roadster 3.0si yesterday from Stratstone BMW Doncaster, obviously being approved used it has full BMW history and 12months warranty and MOT. The cars done 51,500 miles. When buying the car the salesman assured me that it doesn't need the Inspection 2 service for 12k miles. A fact that the service indicator confirms when I get in the car. BUT on reflection and obviously it's too late now, I realise that it hasn't been serviced since 26/08/11. Not even an oil service.

Here's the service history breakdown

11/10/07 - Oil service - 14,654 miles
07/07/09 - Inspection 1 - 31,741 miles
26/08/11 - Oil service - 47,868 miles
10/09/13 - I bought the car @ 51,480 MOT'd
Inspection 2 due at 62k-ish

OK so clearly a lot of time has gone by since the last oil service despite the lack of mileage. So, is this bad? Do I need to get the Inspection 2 done now do you think?? This has taken the shine off the new car feeling for me as don't want to be stung with a £400 Inspection 2 bill from the off!

Also, at such an age would you recommend I stay with BMW for services or would you be switching to a BMW specialist? I suppose what I'm getting at is, is it worth sticking with BMW for what extra you get on resale value?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

Personally I would just spend £50 on a National Tryres oil/filter change, and don't reset the service light. Your car has decent history so IMO the long (time) gap between services isn't an issue. The majority of an inspection 1/2 is just visual checks anyway, they don't actually change many things.

Thanks. The car goes through the usual 120 point inspection (apparently) by BMW. So I would expect this to have flagged up any issues with low oil etc. Good advice though thanks.

Need clarification on here but understood it was either mileage based or every two years, BUT & here's the BUT believe it's whatever comes first.

Check your service schedule book & if it says this, then I'd take it back to the dealers, point this out & ask for the INSP 2 otherwise would not be warrantied under AUC as had not been serviced per requirements.

Simply say whilst the car may show another 12k miles, the salesman may not have been aware it was over two years - use their documentation

Thanks for the advice. I can't see any word on time-based info in the service booklet. Can anyone help out please?

Just checked my service book and the service is mileage based but it does state that if you are doing low annual mileage you should change the oil after 2 years. Brake fluid is every 2 years as well.

Edit: It's under "Special note on engine oil changes".

Thanks. So based on that, I should be insisting they do an oil service?

I would and check when the brake fluid needs changing as well. When you first switch on and whilst the display shows the time to the next service press the right hand button and it will show the month and year when the brake fluid change is due.

For info the distance to the next service is calculated from your fuel consumption for 500 gallons.

Just a reminder to all that AUC means nothing and dealers WILL sell cars with patchy service history.

OP's service history looks OK though.

Thanks. I'm surprised BMW would though. They gave me a 20minute speech about their service and customers for live blurb. Man I must have been duped!

I bought my first ///M AUC. Dealer stated all their ///M cars must have BMW full service history. But didn't point out the one they were selling was under serviced by eight months. I returned it 2 days later for full refund.

what is average for inspection two, 62k seems a long time , mine came up at 49k, too much hooning maybe? ,I have done interim oil change for peace of mind any way and will continue to do so every 5 or 6 k, remember , no dealer will fettle yr z better than you. especially if they are selling it as any money spent on it prior to sale is straight off their profit. go to a good indy for better service at less money, read my review of paddock motors in exeter., oh and by the way i dont think a main dealer will be doing an ins 2 for 400 quid. good luck and enjoy.

Strongly worded email just sent to the dealer. Call going on tomorrow. They had betters agree to do the oil service and fluid change.

Cheers everyone!

Update...

The dealer disagrees that it needed an oil service despite the time elapsed. I have to take the car in so they can read the computer in person. If it says it needs one then they will do an oil service for free. At the very least though I will insist they do the brake fluid change as that is vital.

See what happens.

If this is BMW then they know 2 years is the maximum, and knowing BMW would try and push an Inspection Service over oil any day of the week even if not due on mileage.

I would respectfully suggest that the time based oil service is much more vital than a brake fluid change.

The same oil, sloshing about in the engine for more than 2 years would worry me. The brake fluid may well be perfect. Have it checked for water content and it's probably fine. 2 year service intervals on brake fluid is overdoing it in my opinion.

As already mentioned, It's clearly laid out in the service book that 2 years is the maximum the car should go without an oil change. Just remind the dealer of that. It's not on any computer that's in or attached to the car as well the dealer knows. Just make sure that the next visit to the dealer is for the oil service which his company insist should be done at 2 years.
