Servce Sequence

Hi,

I've just collected my car from the local Indy following it's service and just wanted to run this by members to see if it's unusual or normal? The car has just turned 6 years old, when I bought it it had two service stamps, an oil service at 18k and an inspection 1 and brake fluid change at 38k at roughly two year intervals, the last inspection being March 2011. The service indicator was showing is was due for an inspection in 9500 miles but the two years were up hence me booking it in. I'd already changed the air filter and plugs so it ended up having a mini Inspection 2 and a brake fluid change. So, on paper, it appears to have missed an oil service although clearly it hasn't as it had only covered 7k in the two years since it's last inspection. The indicator now shows 19500 miles to the next oil service. Is it usual to have inspections one after the other - would it be the fact that it had only covered 7k miles in two years that would trigger this do you think?

With time based servicing, I think it's more normal for the garage not to reset the service indicator. So, in 9500 miles you'd put it through an oil service.

I have a similar query. Car's done 25k miles, service book shows just 2 entries - pdi inspection and a service around 16k. As its a 2007 car, should there be more stamps? Is the service only based on mileage/driving, or should there be a time-based element?

Ahh, so now it should be showing "Inspection" in 19.5k and not "Oil Service" as it is. I could reset it again but I guess it doesn't matter too much as it's had it's oil service & brake fluid change either way, which is the most important part imo. I'm more concerned about how it looks if/when I come to sell it on. If I still have the car the next service is likely to be time based in two years rather than mileage based as I struggle to do more than 6k a year.

My service book has 2 sections; time based and use based. I'd expect it to follow that;

- brake fluid changes appear in time based every 2 years (I'd want another stamp if it was done as part of inspection)
- oil changes could appear in time based or use based, depending on whether 2 years comes before the service indicator
EDIT: time based is only for brake fluid in my service book, which is a bit confusing as oil services always end up in use based. It would look a bit odd to see 2 oil services side by side, but perhaps that's the right thing to do?
- inspections always appear in use based

For cars that do relatively low mileage, not all owners realise they have time based servicing to do. I have no facts and figures, but I suspect a lot of owners think they have full service history if the use based side of the service book is filled in. How much a missing time based service would put a buyer off probably depends on the individual buyer - personally, I wouldn't let a missed brake fluid change put me off, but 3-4 years on the same oil would.

Mine only has one section titled "Evidence of Maintenance Work" and the individual sub-sections are all identical - the only way to tell between an inspection and an oil service is the sequence and/or the individual items ticked. The mileage over time and the services carried out all add up - 45k, 6 years and three services - so perhaps I'm worrying about nothing.

You've opened the usual can of worms again.

Basic order is oil, service one, oil, service two, oil .........

Brake fluid change every two years.

However......

If like me you only do a few thousand mile per year then you may have multiple oil changes between service one or two due to mileage not being met.

I picked my car up today after having an oil, microfilter and brake fluid change as two years have passed since last service but there is 7k left till service two.
