SBSL Module Issue

Afternoon folks, hopefully someone on here with more coding/programming experience than me can help....

My Z4 is throwing up some faults on the SBSL module which appear to relate to it being faulty and needing reprogrammed. I don't have the codes to hand just now but will add them to this later when I'm home.

The strange thing is I seem to be able to communicate withe the supposedly faulty module and can reset the codes in DIS or ISTA-D but they come back after cycling the ignition again.

Last night I fired up SSS Progman and carried out a module update, it did show as the part number having been changed and then successfully updated and completed with no issues confirming it had now carried out the part number update (I assume it may be that the module was swapped before I bought the car but hadn't been updated)

One of the codes however does flag up in ISTA-D stating that the module is either faulty or needs to be programmed. I have a suspicion that this is actually the main problem and is the reason for all the other SBSL codes.

My question therefore is what do I do in SSS to "program" the module? I had assumed that doing the update on it would program it as well but now realise this might not be the case.

I am very comfortable in using ISTA-D, DIS, INPA and NCSExpert for changes such as turning features on and off but have never fully recoded a module or programmed one using SSS, WINKFP or similar. I do also have ISTA-P but it does not work with my D+KCAN Cable so I am restricted to using either SSS, NCSExpert or WinKFP but need some guidance from someone who may have done this before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

try doing a retrofit in SSS and it will ask which module has been changed, pick SBSL then input the new module part number which might be 6974366 , it will then ask for old number which might be 6845157. Then let it program the module, if the module is not faulty then it should sort itself out, otherwise you need a replacement new one.

This old thread might be worth a read with similar issues eventually fixed by 'kis'

Hi Mac! Here’s a photo I just took of the module that’s in the car.

And this is what comes up in SSS but won’t let me change any numbers ?

Here are the faults it’s throwing .....

What are your thoughts? It looks like DIS reports the module as a different part number to Progman and to what’s on the label, is this normal ?

try doing a retrofit again in SSS and when asks for part numbers make sure you put the first one as new part no. and the second one as the old number which is 6945157.

Hi Mac, it won’t let me do a retrofit for that module, only a replacement and when you do that in SSS it doesn’t ask for part numbers it just does it’s own thing and shows the screen I posted above then just let’s you click accept ?

when you go via retrofit it asks if any modules have been replaced, you say yes the pick SBSL, then it asks for new part number, then old part number.

So a note to all..... Don’t try to reprogram a faulty module with your engine running. It sets off your passenger dash airbag !!!!! :headbang: :fuelfire:

New dash, airbag and SBSL module now arriving tomorrow then the fun begins ! RIP out the old dash and refit everything then reprogram it all again.... with the engine switched off!

To be fair I knew I shouldn’t have done it with the engine on but thought I might have got away with it. Turned out I didn’t lol 😂

well i have always reprogrammed with engine running and never had an issue, done 4 SBSL modules now. cant believe it set the airbag off

I think the problem with mine was it had internally shorted out and when I tried again to recode it and re enable the airbags it shorted itself out and fired the dash one. My new sbsl module arrived today though so installed it, recoded it with 2018 Ista P after doing a vin change in winkfp and now it's all sorted and no more lights or errors 8)

Now just need to set aside some time to replace the ruined dash but think that will be a weekend job!!

On the bright side I got the sbsl module for £20 and a complete dash with passenger airbag for £80 delivered.

Guess the new SBSL module was a used one if you had to use winkfp to change the vin, a new module only needs SSS or Ista to be coded.
