satnav install problems

yes, you need to remove about 3 mm of foam all around the screen but NOT the plastic. The screen will rest on the plastic then and will be the correct height.

I didnt do this as I removed more material in he first place I think.

What template did you use Jamie?

Regarding the three holes I didnt drill them, just used a stubby screwdriver effort and persistance which worked fine.

I have just got my z4 and i have the same problem, no sound on nav.
I believe it was factory fitted but cant be 100% sure.
i also have bluetooth.

How can i check if it was factory fitted or not?

Go to the dealer with you vin. and ask them to check - they should be able to give you a read out of accesories fitted on delivery.

Could the problem have been caused by the previous owner installing the aux socket?

possible the previous owner could have dislodged a wire, only way to check would be to remove the headunit and take a look. If it's under warranty take it back to dealer though.

After much persistance I've got the screen in. It's not perfect as I would like, but I'm now too scared to cut back anymore. I found it sat flat when it' wasn't screwed down, but as soon as I started putting screws in it lifts the screen. So I resorted to cable tying the front of the sreen using the screw holes and then screwing down the back. Pictures will follow. (Thanks for all the help PVR Srhutch)

Jamie slide some masking tape under the monitor whilst it's in place then trace round and remove the monitor, this will show you how much material you can remove safely.

I wouldn't worry about the top three screws as I drove mine for nearly 2 years without them fitted.

Cheers but I had a 2010 disc come with the unit. It's also been updated to v 31. However I dont seem to have a start up screen. Would like to have the M logo but a little reluctant to mess with updating it. Unless it's very simple.

Start up screen only appears when the system has been shut down completely. On xoutpost.com there is a complete how-to update the splash screen.

I've been playing around with the sat nav since installing it. Due to not having the manual I'm stumped by a few things. Why is it that only certain names appear next to the phone number on text messages. And why when you hit the phone menu does it take you to the top 8 phone numbers instead of the sub menu with SMS, Emergency and Phonebook etc? Has anyone got a spare manual they want to sell?

Order yourself a manual from your local dealer, IIRC I paid around £10 for mine, well worth it for completeness

Can anyone confirm when it is you should see the start up screen? As since I've installed it I've only seen it twice, over about 30 trips.

Rare to see start up screen, cant tell you the last time I saw mine, don't worry about it, it's normal.

I see it every time I start the car when it has not been used for say a week or so.

You only see the splash screen on a cold boot.. ie when the car wakes from sleep.

The wake process starts from when you unlock the car - so in theory if it takes you 30 seconds to unlock & put your key in, you probably won't see it.

srhutch is a bit slow so that explains it for him :poke:

wouldn't expect anything else from you. :-P

but yes by the time I have unlocked, disconnected the CTEK and got in the system has probably booted up.
