Sat Nav Screen

Hi Guys,
My sat nav has started to become a bit tempremental. It doesn't always pop up when I turn the car on. If I try to prise it up with my hands it will come so far then flip back down, if i repeat this a few times eventually it will stay up and the screen will come on.

I have tried spraying a bit of WD40 in the sides but it hasn't made any difference.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Tom

Probably the stepper motor on the way out. No option other than replacing the whole screen I'm afraid.

Bugger, that sounds expensive.

Any suggestions where to source a replacement? new or secondhand the way to go?

Cheers,
Tom

Or a new one from German dealers, but shipping is more difficult.

Srhutch and myself got a nice spare unit, bought new from Germany for next to nothing ...

im sure if there was a firmware patch made available that stopped the damn thing popping up all the time, then we wouldnt have as many motor failures

Can't see any on there at the moment at the price we paid, there all about three times more expensive.

keep an eye on ebay.de as PVR says.

Cheers SR, just had a look on ebay here and there's only one, s/h and they want £350, what a joke.

What term do you search for on ebay.de please?

If I put mine down before I switch off the car it stays down when I next start it up... Which is fine until you change the radio station using a pre-set button and it pops up again. Must be the key-memory ?

tell a lie, found one but you would need to transplant the bit over if you want black, and delivery maybe a problem but you can only ask. From Munich Main Dealer so I'm sure they will post.

search for "Z4 CID" for future reference.

Thanks very much indeed just asked if they will ship it to the UK

Sorry am late to this but is there no way of snipping the "in" cable? Sure it maybe slightly annoying but I would rather have it stuck in the out position. At least it is usable? Unless this is linked to the power to the unit which may mean it stays on when the ignition is off? Can't see why it would though.

No need to snip anything, just unplug the wire from the switch.

Whether it will work though is another matter :idunno:

Aye sorry meant it as more generic term. Have no idea what switches etc there are in there which are easily accessible.

"Is there no way of making the "in" signal wiring open circuit?", is what I should have said maybe. :D

Of course without knowing where the stepper motor is either I would not know 100% but if it is not integral then this may also be repairable or replaceable? It may take some hunting down but there are companies that deal in this sort of thing and it may just be cheaper than a new display. Wish I could remember where we used to send away such items but many are also no fix no fee.

Aha somewhere like this:

http://www.neutronics-uk.com/motors.html

It maybe not in your neck of the woods but the guys there will help and maybe even give a ballpark figure to repair. It isn't cheap and they may only deal with companies but if that is the case they will no doubt recommend places closer or places that do deal in one offs. Sadly I cannot remember the name of the bloke that used to be my contact but he would definitely help regardless of whether they could fix it or not so I imagine most there will.

This may not be possible but just a thought. It is truly amazing some of the random stuff we have sent to them that they have managed to repair.

No SR they did not say why they wouldn't. I am in the the Army so I am trying to think if I have any mates out in Germany at the moment who could take delivery and ship it on for me.

Thanks for the link Andy that could well be my plan B.
