Sat nav how much?

Would anyone know about how much it would cost to have sat nav fitted at a BMW dealer?
(Buying the sat nav and the fitting form the dealer)

C'mon 2dogs. Source a few bits off ebay and a weekend pulling the interior to pieces and it's done. You'll have to be brave to set about cutting a hole in the dash, but pvr will point you in the right direction...lol

Those were the official dealer costs, and you have to find a dealer that actually wants to do it as well.

DIY costs about £600 or so. Fitting everything takes 2 hours, the dash cutting took me 6 hours though ...

.. and so can the thieves :D

It is not just the satnav, the screen provides additional board computer functions, radio station stuff, telephone list / sms etc as well as iPod navigation with the right interface. Mainly toy value, but then again the car is my toy ...

I was toying with the idea but don't think it's worth the cost and hassle (especially cutting the dash) when the unit will always be inferior to a TomTom (or other make).

Fair point about the extra screen space :)

Thieves arent a problem always take it out of the car. Portable has another advantage though... In an unfamiliar town you can record where you parked your car, then be able to find it again should you get lost

This is always going to be one of those debates on which there is no right or wrong answer in terms of 'inferior unit'
Personally I doubt I'd go through the retrofit process purely to get Sat Nav, nor for bluetooth, nor better radio, nor MFSW, etc. in isolation...

Sat Nav (and for that matter the telephony) are much easier to achieve with aftermarket which have generally better mapping, easy to fit and portable. Actually I have damn good Sat Nav on my vodaphone Blackberry and also on my rarely used PDA, both equal to or better than OEM for pure mapping, so that's what I'd do if I just wanted the one item.

On the other side as PVR mentions it's the totally integrated aspect and 'oh so neat' installation.

The real benefit to me is total integration from audio, phone, mapping, voice control of sat nav and phone, integrated speakers, mike, etc. etc.. All steering wheel and/or voice controlled. No power leads, no suckers/mounts. One retractable large screen. The list goes on. As a TOTAL package there is nothing on the market that is even in the same league, but that's just my opinion :)

It is a good unit, but for me if I wanted fixed sat nav in a car I would have bought a 7 Series! :poke:

I have a Tom Tom that works well, but I rarely use it to be honest! I'm also too busy watching out for corners, police, bikers and the next line round the next corner to read stuff like Emails or radio stations in my sports coupe! I deliberately looked for a Z4 without sat nav to be honest! Each to their own I guess. Im happy with the bluetooth option only. Now that is worth having!

But ... when you come to sell, the not having of this feature reduces the price of the car by a lot more then the original costs of it.

To illustrate this, there are two parts:

1. Dealer used values. Check for an M without satnav versus one with, price difference is up to 4K at the dealers
2. I sold my old 3.0, three years old, for 19K. Had all the toys, others are having issues selling it for 14k on this very board

Glasses guide shows for an X5 without comms (ok, different car) a trade value which is 3.5K less. All in all, it is not cost effective NOT to have it.

I have to agree with PVR and I have consulted the dealer on this issue

I will easily get the £500 I paid for all he kit when I come to sell. Dont get me wrong I think the TomTom is better, but if I were buying secondhand I think one with SatNav will sell quicker as well.
